My Tach isnt working all the time.. Why???

I have a 2004 Silverado and for the last couple of weeks every few days my tach will be at Zero when at idle and only go up to about 1100rpms but when I shut the truck off and the next time I start it, it works fine. Is it a computer issue or gauge issue.
