I pick it up tonight....so I gotta look over the whole thing first. I'm a novice, so any suggestions would be welcome. Not looking for over the top power or a show peice....just a clean, reliable motor.

Good find. If a passenger car engine like Fbody, it would have a roller cam. If it's a truck engine, it's roller cam capable (meaning it would accept the factory spider web and roller lifters) but has a flat tappet cam in it.
Either way, those blocks are much cheaper to setup a roller valvetrain vs a retrofit kit. |

Resist the temptation to "upgrade" to an electric fuel pump. At least pull the block-off plate and check to see if you have a block that has been machined for a mechanical fuel pump. I've got all of the pieces in place, waiting for the electric to fail in my truck AGAIN before I install a mechanical on my '93 350.

Thanks for all the well wishes. The motor came from an 88 chevy pickup. Previous owner said all ran fine when pulled. Engine has 80k on it and I will get pics up asap. Before installing I want to do some work/upgrades. I dont want a monster truck, but a reliable rig capable of weekend getaways and just local driving. Off roading will prob be limited to beaches and fireroads. Open to any and all suggestion for build direction. I'm not a mechanic, but not afraid to get dirty or open a book either. Love my truck!!! Love this forum!!

Build direction for a 350 destined for a truck? Are you doing the shortblock too or trying to run as is?
Depends on how fat your wallet is. I don't build anything with a flat tappet cam anymore. Being a newer block with a 1 piece rear main it's already capable of a factory style roller cam swap (or it may have one already if the engine is from a passenger car). I'd personally do a small roller with duration numbers in the 210-220 range and top it off with a cheap set of brand new vortec heads. I little performer intake and a carb of your choice. With a set of long tube headers it would be an easy 325-350hp engine and have a real nice flat torque curve that would move a truck around nicely. That's my idea of a budget build if money is tight. |
