I Want This Option
I was looking on http://outintheshop.com/options.html and saw option L53.
L53 : V-6 DIESEL ENGINE - 2BBL CARB and this M38 : 2 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANS. - TH 350 I thought TH 350's were 3 speed? OK, I'm done nit picking. If I get a new SPID I will definitely install this option on my truck N12 : SINGLE EXHAUST STACK Did they have dual exhaust stacks? |
Re: I Want This Option
Interesting info there. Seems to be options for all conventional series trucks 10-60 series

Re: I Want This Option
the M38 is a TH350 in the car assembly lines, and a few trucks got marked this way.

Re: I Want This Option
Im really curious about this option L53, was it a start on gas then switch to diesel deal like some of the old farmall tractors or something?

Re: I Want This Option
Old diesel engines were carburated.* There was no diesel option for 10-30 C-series. P-series had a diesel option, though.
*EDIT: Or,I thought I had seen it on some old engines. I guess not. It appears the list was wrong. |
Re: I Want This Option
I still would like more info on the carbed diesel as injectors and rotary pumps came in really early, not positive how early but I know for sure injection pumps were a solid design in the 40's

Jeff, the owner of http://outintheshop.com/options.html is a member here. His board name is "chipflyer". I have visited with Jeff at some of the board get togethers and truck shows. Great guy and he has a really nice truck. LockDoc |
Re: I Want This Option
While you are wishing for options, and going big, get a GMC 702 V12 for it also. :)

Re: I Want This Option
O I'm not knocking the list at all for an error. Im just confused and want to be educated on the carbed diesel a few are talking about here. I graduated college as a diesel mechanic and we did get deep into the history and never heard anything about a carb. But I do not know everything, that's why I am on these forums, to take in others knowledge.

Re: I Want This Option
Every where but without carbs. Them 2 stroke Detroit's are my favorite! Back in school we had the pleasure to do a tune up on a 16 cyl Detroit, what a screamer.

Re: I Want This Option
Alright, i did some research back into the carburetor diesel subject. Still cant find nothing about it. All i can find is what we learned back in school that Rudolph Diesel invented the diesel in 1897 using and injector that utilized compressed air to atomize the fuel, the injector was open and closed by the cam shaft spraying atomized fuel into the cylinder. This was the first diesel and used fuel injection. If anyone had any info the the carburetor deal please let me know. I love learning new facts. And i really am not trying to prove an error on the list at all, some peoples info on here really has me wondering if there is something cool out there i don't know about, i love working with diesels.

Re: I Want This Option
Sorry bud, like i said no disrespect, i wasn't trying to call out and error. A few others posts in this thread just had me believing there was something out there i didn't know about in the diesel world. Like i said im here to learn. Awesome list with all the options, wish my truck came with even a handful of them!

Re: I Want This Option
Since diesel engines are compression ignition, not spark ignition, the fuel injection system is the timing device. If you have a carburetor on a diesel, and you try to kill the engine.....how's that going to happen? You have to shut off the fuel flow, or it will continue to run until it runs out of fuel. A carburetor just can't efficiently stop fuel from entering into the manifold and an engine that has the high compression of a diesel, will continue to pull the fuel into the cylinders with the high vacuum created by the design of the engine.
If Rudolph Diesel designed it with an injection system, then they will have injection systems. GM (Detroit) diesel engines used 45mm N-type injectors that were controlled by a cam. That cam is what controlled the timing of the fuel as it was injected into the cylinder. They didn't have carburetors. My truck data book for '69 doesn't list a diesel engine as an option. For example, when you bought a 50-series truck, you got a gas engine truck or you got a diesel engine truck. For instance, a 50-series diesel could be either a 4-53 OR a 478. As for dual stack vs single stacks....the CD50 got a single stack (option N12 for $47.35); the CG50 got dual stacks (option N13, for 96.85). CD50's had the 4-53; the CG50's had the 478 V-6. |
Re: I Want This Option
Thought I had see old diesels with carbs. I guess I remembered wrong. It makes sense they'd have injection.
