72 C10 SWB: Project "One Piece"
 

Hey guys...

Here's the project that DWT and I are working on. We have a 72 C10 SWB that we bought locally. The guy that originally did the work on this truck loved Bondo...

Anyway.. Here's what we're going to have to do to get it ready.

Body:

I Have a ton of pics going back to the 1st part of October when we started but I got pretty slack with pics throughout November.

We found some other issues...

-->this is the reason for the name.. "One Piece"

We fix 1 piece and something else needs fixing... But we're doing it One Piece at a time.. *lol*

We decided that grinding the welds down on the sides was a waste of time as this is going to be a "driver/parts getter NFS truck" and the fenders will cover it anyway.

So via pictures we have arrived at the "End of November"...
By this time the weather is telling us to pull my late grandpa's LWB out of the shop and get One Piece in or we won't be doing anything for the winter... Not a valid option as we need this truck ASAP to get back on the real project...

Let me bring everyone up to current with a few more pics, and then I'll try to be a little more diligent with the posts and updates.

I also replaced the Pass. A-Pillar but there are no pics of this replacement...

After the floors and A's were done we put the truck in the shop and did a little primer work to keep the stuff we had fixed all buttoned up and rust free.

We took the Bed off and set it outside on a makeshift stand (4 cinder blocks and 2 4x4s) since we knew the rear crossmembers were total junk, we went ahead and removed the 2 that were present, and ordered the complete set from another board member. Since the frame is visible we decided to go ahead and wire wheel/grinder/etc.. all of the rust/tar/grime/nastiness off of it and shoot it with some Implement paint from Tractor Supply.

Not only did the original body man love bondo.. He pieced the engine together using a '79 350 with a '66 283 intake and '66 4 jet carb. (Pre-Quadrajet)
the numbers indicate that it is a Canadian engine...

So yesterday...

We cut away the rotten part of the Drivers side rear floor... Along with the rotten B-Pillar and the hack job cab corners that were on the cab. Time and lack of parts is holding us up right now, but we should have the floor completely finished in a few days. Once I get the B-Pillars back on, I'll be ready to tackle the cab corners.

After that it should be ready to prep for paint...

I hope!

"One Piece" has surely lived up to the name so far. :D

Nothing much to update on "One Piece" in the last couple of days.

Dadsworktruck did some work on the blast cabinet, so I tested it out with the brace that goes across the driver's side inner fender and the bracket that holds the radiator overflow bucket. (I guess that's what it is called)

I didn't get any pics of these parts before the blasting but they look much better satin black :lol:

A blast cabinet is definitely on my list of wants/needs at this point...(with a large compressor for it and air tools....but anyone who's been to my house knows there's no room in my garage for either of these and I've already taken over the downstairs so I'm limited until I move...

I heard that VA! Space is something that everyone can always use more of, but few have the luxury of getting.

Didn't do anything at all to the truck again today. I had a mandatory meeting for the Nursing department at the college so I didn't bother freezing for just a few hours, only to have to rush to clean up before going to that.

Hopefully if the weatherman is correct in his predictions, tomorrow will be a great day to finish welding in a floor pan... who knows maybe even a B-Pillar if I can keep "Murphy" from finding the shop door. :D

Rust repair.....aww gotta love it. Looks good. Gonna get me some of that in the near future. What is the red you are using? rust inhibiting primer?

Well... "Murphy" did indeed find the shop door, but a swift kick in the butt and he left again :D
I fired up the welder only to hear ..Hissss.. and I knew that wasn't a good thing. Found the issue, cheap Argon supply hose had a hole in it near the nipple, so I fixed that and got to work.

I finished welding in the Driver's floor pan. Did some banging on a curved area that wasn't playing nice. Got all that squared away and started working on the B-Pillar.

If you've never put one of these on, they're not too bad. Just have to drill the hole for the bottom screw and drop it behind where you cut off the old one to get a good mark for cutting.

The fun part, which I found out totally by accident is welding the nut on the outside of the pillar. It is all but impossible to do it with it bolted up. (well for my skill level anyway)

But now that the B and the floor are finished we're almost ready for Cab corner and prepping for outer rockers.

My hectic school schedule this semester is going to seriously damper my time for working on the truck, but if all goes well it might be driving down the road by summer... (which would be nice cause as it looks now I'm out of school all summer!!)

First off, Thanks for the Sub!

Secondly, that primer is the Southern Polyurethane Industries Part# 6630-4 (Red Epoxy Primer.)

At first I hated that red, but it's growing on me a little.

The only reason we got it to begin with was the local paint shop that we got it from only had it in red by the quart. After finding all the other stuff we had to fix we decided to go back and buy a gallon in the grey.

I think this post was meant for my dad; but thanks for the update heavy cause those parts are going on this truck anyway :D

Thanks that makes sense. I figured it was some kind of primer. Is it two part or one? I need to get some epoxy primer myself. Keep up all the hard work.:chevy:

Yep that primer is a 2 part.
It's pretty straight forward to use. It mixes 1:1 primer to hardener..
As far as how well it sprays, Dadsworktruck will have to chime in on that, I have only sprayed the TSC implement paint so I can't really say.

The only mixing and usage issues that I'm aware of, are that the epoxy is VERY sensitive to temperature and moisture. We sprayed some one day when it was raining lightly outside and that was a disaster. There is a minimum of 60 degree air temp. on the paint as well, so we are holed up for the winter on any painting, aside from frame work. (Since the frame paint is TSC implement finish, which has a minimum of 40 degree working temp, so we can still sneak in some painting with that as the air temps allow.)
