help with timing
alright well I changed my lifters and readjusted all the valves but its still misfireing im guessing it has to be the timing, now ive done my timing once a while back but i tried this time and it just turns off so i must be doing something wrong can any one tell me step by step on how to do my timing on a l6 230 1bbl ?

The 1963 Chevy Truck Shop Manual says the following: 1.) Connect a timing light at No. 1 spark plug. 2.) Attach a tachometer at coil, disconnect the distributor spark advance hose and plug the vacuum source opening. 3.) Start engine and run at idle speed (450-500rpm). 4.) Aim timing light at timing tab near harmonic balancer **The markings on the tab are in 2* increments. The "O" marking is to DC and all BTDC settings fall on the "A"(advance) side of "O". 5.) Adjust the timing by loosening the distributor clamp and rotating the distributor body as required, then retighten the clamp. 6.) Stop the engine and remove timing light and tachometer and reconnect the spark advance hose. Then you want to adjust the carb idle speed and mixture.

Pretty much just like any car is done, as 1963c10 said
The only thing I would add is that on my mostly stock 230 1bbl, my truck runs best at between 10-12 degrees advanced. I believe the service manual says to set it to 4 degrees advanced however, but anything between 4 and 10 degrees advanced should get you running. |

alright well I got the timing set ..... but i have another concern i recently changed the lifters because there was a tick in the engine around that area but after i put new lifters the ticking is still there sometimes its loud and sometimes you can barley hear it any idea of what it could be?

Since you are running a flat tappet cam, could be a worn cam lobe. Especially since on these old motors there is no way to know how old the cam is unless you replaced it yourself already.

Could also be your mechanical fuel pump if the return spring in it is getting tired. Almost a knock than a tick though.

well the sound comes from the front of the engine so maybe it is the fuel pump ill have to try the stethoscope on it tomorrow but more than likely i think its the cam because when you rev it up sometimes you ether hear it more or not hear it at all and i don't think the fuel pump would sound any different if you rev it up or not

The fuel pump sound kind of comes and goes when reving it up and isn't evn consistant at idle, I wasn't sure with the stethiscope so I unbolted the pump and pulled it back some and no noise so changed it.

what do you mean you pulled it back?

I just meant I unbolted the pump pulled it back a bit with lines still attached, far enough so the pump arm wasn't touching the pump rod.
