Can I roll back time?
 

When I bought my truck it had 144,000 original miles on it. In '92 the motor was changed to a 350 crate motor and it had 14,000 at the time of purchase. Since then I have changed the rear end to new, drive shafts, U-joints, and carrier bearing to new, transmission to new, motor has been completely rebuilt (block is the only thing is not new in the engine and it was bored out), four wheel disk brake conversion (all new components), new springs on all four wheels. There is not one thing on the entire drive train the is not new. My question is can I roll back the odometer to zero or is that a frowned upon? It is not a big deal to me one way or another, really more of a convenience thing. As I start putting miles on the new engine, I would like to look at the o.d. reading and not have to subtract 144,000 each time I want to know how many miles I have on my engine. I realize there is a certain vintage to having an odometer reading that reflects how long the truck has been around but in my mind the odometer reading is for drive train not the sheet metal

It is frowned upon for more than one reason. First of all, it is illegal in most places since the dmv keeeps records for titles and inspection. Second, it brings up questions in the event of a sale. What happens if you change the engine again and redo the brakes or change the rear? It has nothing to do with any specific part of a car, it is a reference for the whole car. Oil was changed at 57000, rear was rebuilt at 112000, brakes lasted 50000 and tires lasted 40000. You are always going to have to do the math for something.

I know it's illegal some places,but that never made sense to me.So in the places it's illegal,if the speedo breaks then you're supposed to guess the speed(since it's illegal to change the speedo) or does it then become legal? I think the law was supposed to stop "stealerships" and used car dealers from setting back milage to get a better price for cars.If you want to change it out then you could go to zero easily.

It's no different than changing the gauge cluster. I can't think of a single DMV that tracks cars that old.. In 3 different states a have lived in, all of them put "NA" on the mileage or "exempt" due to the age. With only a limited number of digits available and if it read 44,000, I would expect it to actually be 244,000 miles on it and not an original 44,000 mile truck... My two cents plus some.

In missouri if it's 10 yrs or older it becomes exempt from mileage.

Reporting the odometer reading is not mandatory for California vehicles older than 10 years.

I don't think any of that odometer stuff applies to vehicles that old. No information needs to recorded on the titles for them either, not in Iowa anyway.

Exempt in Florida too. My new cluter says 00000.
