What converter do you run?
I did not realize there were so many companies that made converters. Which one do you run?

I am now running a 5,200 rpm abruzzi unit. His customer service is exceptional. My glide had an issue straight from him, pump broke, he paid for shipping both ways and fixed it for free. I have nothing but great things to say about him and his shop!

We have been running Hughes for the last 5 years or so. The more you know about your combination the better match you can get when you call any of the convertor guys. Coan, PTC, Hughes, BTE ar some to look into.

I run Cameron's Converter Services from South Carolina. He is known for having the fastest powerglide trans and converters. As stated above...know all specs on your combo. IE. Weight, tire, gear, compression, head flow, can specs, gear ratios in trans, and anything else you can think of. Al of this preperation will insure a good choice first shot. Inaccurate info and variables WILL cause you much heartache. Paul Baxter

Not to try to steal this thread, but since this thread has asked a great question, I'd like to see some more light shed on the subject. For starters I'm a young guy (23) to be exact. Now my understanding is you should pick a stall speed (RPM RANGE) that your cam makes power in, correct me if wrong. Now I also see that there are several different ways in choosing the correct converter for your application ( Gears, Trans Ratios, Big block, Small Block, etc..) I guess some of my questions are If you have a huge stall, do you even need a transbrake? Why are some guys running what seem to me such high stall speed ( 4500 and up ) is this because they are spinning the engine to 7500 +. Any info for my uneducated self would be great!

When choosing your stall speed. You should have everthing in mind. When does your cam start pulling? Where does your intake start? Weight of the vehicle, gear ratio in the rear end and etc. The info you can provide the better an closer you can get to what you need. If you are just buying one of the shelf. Consider your specs? For example if your setup starts pulling at 2000 consider a 2500-2800 converter. If it starts at 3000 start with something around a 3500. Street try to have all the converter in at your cruising speed. Just my thoughts.

Yes, the torque converter should be built for the application. Here is what I complete each time I order a new torque converter...other converter builders have have worksheets similar that customers complete, including attaching dyno results. http://mikestransmission.com/catalogdatasheet.html
Having a high stall converter doesn't mean the car will not move under the rated stall RPM...I run an 8-inch, ~6200 RPM stall converter, and run a transbrake to launch my car at my engine's optimum torque band addressing all of the other details in the worksheet. And, yes, I am going through the traps at around 7900 RPM. |

Believe me there is a big deference between a off the shelf converter and a custom built piece that is built to your dyno sheet and vehicle specs.
I was one of the guys that said there was no way there could be that big of a deference between a custom converter and a off the shelf converter..... Well one day I broke down and went for it...... You know the want to light the world on fire with a 4100lb truck thing. The 1st time I drove it nothing but :metal: smile's from that day out. WOW! what a big change. |

Got a B&M with a 2400rpm stall in front of a TH400. Never had the first problem with it.:metal:

I run a PTC. Kenny Ford and his guys race around here and will do anything they can to help you at the track or over the phone.

Pretty much Hughes (rans and convertors) in everything I race except a Midwest custom convetor in the truck,, had nothing but trouble with BTE trans, convertors / brakes ,,, be cautious there.

I run an old TPI 8" unit in mine. Like the rest of the guys have already said, don't cheap out on a converter. There is a difference; I found this out several years ago when I replaced an el-cheapo vega converter that I had bought just to get the manual-to auto trans swap done in my truck with a TCI street fighter that had the same stall speed. It picked up 4 tenths in the 1/8 with no other changes.

Dalenzie 10" 3500. Local shop with a great reputation among the local racers. Got it for $300 after a friend only had about 10 minutes of street driving on it. He paid over $500 and decided to get a 5500. Humougous difference from the 2400-2800 stocker i once had. I could not imagine going back to a non custom build verter for anything that has decent power. I love how fast it lets the engine rev.
