Sound Deadening
 

I have an 84 crew cab that I need to install some sound deadening into. I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this so it needs moved feel free to move it. What is the best kind of sound deadening to use to kill engine noise? I have a bunch of noise coming through thr firewall and I am not sure what to use to kill the sound. I have been looking at dynamat and dynapad but they both seem to be more high frequency noise killers and vibration noise killers. So what would be my best thing to put under the dash and maybe firewall to help kill the engine noise?

Dynamat helps vibration, too. I did a double layer on my firewall of peel and seal then the same pad I used under the carpet. My engine is pretty loud, but you can't hear a thing now.

We just completed our 71 GMC cab with FatMat. We used it under the dash, firewall, floor, behind the gas tank,cab corners, and the doors.
It's still in the rebuilding stage so we have not had a chance to test it for sound deadning. It is real easy to work with.

I went with this company (http://www.raamaudio.com/) for my sound deadening products.

I don't really have any experience with any deadening products, and haven't even installed any of this yet, but it's supposed to be the best bang for the buck which I'm always looking for.

Back a long time ago I did installs for a custom shop. What I found was that unless you are going to enter a sound off, most sound mat will work just fine. I have covered my floor and fire wall on the 62. Inside the doors I used a spray in type, the doors get funny with heat and it can fall off if the surface is not spotless etc. Easier to do some some doors than others.

I am using it to keep the out side noise ... out side ha ha . Single application on floors is fine add a heavy under carpet jute and you will be amazed at how much noise is reduced.

im with jimmydean...Peel And Seal from lowes in the roofing section it comes in rolls about 8 inches wide and 20 foot long if i can remember right. its like dynamat and has a aluminum piece on top. it works

There are different levels of sound deadening. Do you just want to prevent vibration and rattling? then the sticky stuff (dynamat, etc) covers that. If you want road noise, etc. then you need more than that, i.e mass loaded vinyl, foam, etc.. I'm personally going with SDS.

I priced out doing my entire cab and doors in my 87 for about 300, and that is including going up into the dash area.

I ran Stinger Road Kill over every inch of my cab.. new carpet with full pad.. new rubber seals..

It REALLY made a difference...

Theres 3 steps to sound insulation, damper(dynamat, fatmat etc.), isolator(foam, jute etc) and barrier(mass loaded vinyl). I used dynamat directly on the panesl and bought some insulation from McMasterCarr that was mass laoded vinyl glued to 1/2" foam. Its not cheap but its easy to install and works well.

did mine today, went to home depot bought two rolls of self adhesive foam duct insulator and a roll of aluminum seam tape and here was the final look. cost me $50 bucks. Rolls we $18 each and tape was $8

It was easy to work with, cuts very easy with a blade and souns so much better...

Hey guys thanks for the ideas. Truck is on hold for right now as I had a little fire (trucks fine just gotta replace a brake line) and so I pulled it off the road and going to start a cummins swap. These ideas should help me figure out what I want to do about the sound deadner. I got some dynamat left over that I might just use in the doors and get some of that stuff from lowes or home depot and use that on the floor.

the stuff from lowes works good....also the cummins swap is great. my buddies got on in his truck and that thing is awsome

I used edead because the cost was low. Not as thick as dynamat. I think the problem with the stuff from hardware stores is its tar based unlike dynamat which is butyl rubber. Not sure If its the best option even with the cost being so low.

stuff I used from home depot was not tar based. it was foam self adhesive. worked like a champ

here you go. worked really very well and the difference in the cab is amazing.... was so easy to cut with a blade and was easy to shape and mold over the hump and all around the cab. 2 rolls was perfect for the floor and if you want to go up the side and rear of the cab then 3 will work but 4 to be safe

for the guys that doubled up on the dynamat fatmat on the firewall area did it make a big difference? I have gotten my cummins swap done and started driving it some would like to make it a little quieter. thanks

I'd go with multiple layers of different material.

1st a typical dynomat type, then a dense foam, and then your typical stock firewall foam with the cardboard face. Doing that and sound deadening the rest of the cab should be sufficient.

There is no point in doubling up on something like dynamat, theres really no point in having 100% coverage for that matter. Dynamat really blocks very little sound, its for panel dampening not blocking sound. All its supposed to do weigh down the panel so vibrations from outside dont vibrate the panel and making it act like a big speaker. Really, with a quality product like dynamat extreme, 50% coverage is usually enough to get all you can out of it.

True story, more is not always better. I went with Damplifier Pro in my standard cab 77. Its DEAD quiet now.

all,

i was wondering, for all of you that have done it, if this was the only material you used between the carpert and the cab floor? if so how is it working for heat shielding purposes, if not what else did you use for heat shield.

I did peal and seal, then pad, then carpet. Did it for sound (cab is dead quiet now) not heat.
