Heres another I got a couple of months ago...double mounts. I had considered playing around with double mounts on a long bed that would mount lower, but looks too busy.

Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
I have always wondered why some trucks have the side spare and some under the bed, which was standard and which was optional or how did that work?
|
Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
The spare under the bed was standard for fleetsides and stepsides. The fender mount spare was a factory option. The fleetsides also had an option to mount in the bed on the bedside, maybe somebody can supply a pic. It is not a hard conversion for anyone that wants to do one. All you need is the carrier, spare mount fender and the carrier braces. The fender bolts in the stock location of the standard fender. Other than a drill and a few hand tools, it is any easy conversion. I did mine because after 7 years of rodeo and 30 broken bones I just didn't feel like crawling under the bed to get a spare. I think it looks nostalgic and its something that I dont imagine you'll see on any modern trucks any time soon. If you need any help, just ask...I can walk you through it. They are repoping the fenders now for around $499, but honestly...I got mine from a used parts dealer in Arizona carrier/fender rust free shipped for $250. Glad to see there are some more trucks out there with the option. The long beds mount much lower...there is a pic above. They almost look like they are sitting on the step.

Anyway... wish i had pics of my Dads old 64 C-10 with the fender mount spare! |
Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
63 c10, Im actually trying to get her on the road again. She's in overall good shape, for the most part the truck is original as far as I can tell. It has a small block with double hump heads a mild cam and 350 tranny. Eventually I want to do a full off frame restore with several mods. Thanks bro.

I have a 66,Chevy long bed truck with the spare tire mount on the drivers side fender. It is different than the same on the shortbeds I have. The spare hanger is a little further forward, the cut-out in the fender is the same, but there's only one support rod going thru it.And it mounts the wheel at the same height as the shortbeds. Completely different from the longbed shown.Must have been at least 2 ways to do it.Maybe one is dealer and the other is factory? I'll try to post a picture of mine in the morning. Mike.:chevy: |
Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
Pics of my 66 with the 8' bed.
Notice the hanger is farther forward and a little lower. The support angles are both facing forward. And the top braces are below the bed rail. The fender cut-out is a lot different than the 6' bed shown. The truck had 16" wheels on it too.Maybe why the spare hanger is different. The last picture is of the in-bed spare hanger on my 68.It also has the under-bed spare hanger. http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/6866/001gmn.th.jpg http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/5429/002uwo.th.jpg http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1540/003aha.th.jpg http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6875/004nfd.th.jpg Mike.:chevy: |

Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
I love the look of a side mounted spare, but I didn't have the fender mount on my long bed 66. So I just bolted one of those spare trailer tire mounts above the step. When mounted the tire sits on the step.
Like the brown truck in post #6, but on the driver's side. |
Re: Post pics of trucks w/fender mount spare tire carriers
Send a pic, more guys might be able to do the same. The original carriers are not being reproduced.

Found a good solution for a spare tire lock. Corvette and corvair used this style of lock, and maybe other GM cars in the 60's. This lock is NOS for a 63-66 corvette, cost me $45 and came with two keys. It uses a special lug nut (see pic). Fit underneath the factory 63 hubcap no problem. Easy install and will keep the spare tire from being stolen. I wanted something period and wanted something that looked like it was supposed to be there. Cable and a master lock weren't going to make the cut for me.
