Aftermarket stereo...

Well I tore apart my dash and  the '86 has the old small hole for a stock am/fm radio, I don't really want to cut apart the dash to fit a larger one in, but what choice do I have.

Any suggestions on another place/way to mount a stereo?

BigRed 04-28-2003 04:57 PM

About the only option you have is to build a floor console and install the stereo there. There's no other good place to put one. I have seen one installed under the seat and then a remote used to operate it. Pkbinplano did that to his and left his stock stereo in.

When ever I get money and other stuff out of the way I plan on putting a dvd/sterio (one w/ something like a 7" screen that folds out) into the dash. Right where the center airvent would be on a a/c model (center on middle seat).

some of the catalogue companioes sell repro radios that are made by kenwood or something that are made to fit the dash without cutting never used one i settle for AM FM lol

In my C10, I dont have AC. So I cut the dash right in the center where the left AC vent would go and installed the reciever there. I think its the best place for it. But unless you feel comfortable cutting up your dash, I say put it in the glovebox and get a remote.

Ill get pics if anybody wants them

They have those "hidden" stereos that have the guts in a box you put somewhere (under the seat for ex.) and a little flod-down screen and wireless remote you can put anywhere.

A lot of people with old cars and trucks put em in the glove box.

Not certain what the underside of the dash looks like, but you could do what I did in my 69 Cutlass. Not wanting to tear up the dash any, I built a box out of wood that mounts underneath my dash. In this box I have my Pioneer CD player on top and then I have my Oil Pressure/Water Temp/Voltmeter in a line and then below that I have my Air-Fuel gauge/Transmission Temp. Looks pretty good and saved the dash and the old Cutlass radio.

On a truck it would be a bit harder since the dash is a little hard to reach in those areas, but a stereo with a remote would work just great.

The glovebox is an option, but I dislike not being able to see the face of my stereo.

I just did what Bigred said, I just built a floor console, two days ago.

It will hold my Stereo, surround processor, 2- 5-1/4 mids,

2- 1-1/2 tweeters, a GM262 200w amp mounted on the back,

two cans of Bud and my cigerettes comfortably,

and I even still have room for my ash tray to flip down to hold my

wifes -sh!t-- she leaves in it time to time..

here is a pic, I added computer simulation to see what it may look like with components in it.

it's still bare though - don't get scared ....

Just cut it, I did, and don't regret it. My install is so clean...Custom lower door panels, Alpine MP3-CD player, Boston Acoustic (8 speaker system) Everything is covered in tweed to match the interior. The consoles I've seen custom made just detract for the most part. (My opinion)

Here is a picture for you (that you have probly seen 100 times :))

I like the stock location, but if I had a dvd/cd player I would mount in the center of the dash (as shown in anoth thread).
