When I put the big block into my 67 C10 I had to move the engine back to the rear mount points on the frame to get enough crank pulley clearance with the big block. This required me to shorten the driveshaft. The little 2-core radiator was way too small to cool the big block so I needed to upgrade the radiator to the wider and thicker factory big block one to keep it cool. Otherwise it is a pretty straight forward swap. The stock motor mounts are pretty weak so you will want to get some more modern ones that are interlocking at the least but I would suggest upgrading to clamshell style mounts that will not fail and will also give you much better header clearance than the stock motor mount towers offer. Square body engine mount brackets and clamshell mounts pretty much bolt right into our trucks. |
Re: small block to big block?
It is not real hard to put a BB in a SB truck, but as mentioned above does require some mods.
Some things that have to be done depends on what transmission you will be using. We replaced the 350 with a 454 in my '71 C-10. We kept the old granny 4 speed that was originally hooked to the 350. We tried the '71 SB mounts, but they would not allow clearance for the headers so we went with the '73 BB mounts that came with the engine. We lowered the engine in and mated it to the transmission and let the engine settle where it wanted to on the frame rails. We drilled new holes to be able to bolt the engine in. We used the fan shroud off of the '73, but did have to modify it some. We also had to modify the the change the position of the clutch Z bar bracket on the frame and modify the Z bar length some. Doing it this way we did not have to modify the drive shaft and there was plenty of room on the back of the engine to the firewall and at the front to the 3 core radiator. |
Re: small block to big block?
What year is your truck? '68 to '72 were built to fit a big block. As stated above, you will want different motor mounts, and possibly a different radiator, depending what you have now. If you run tall valve covers, they may hit the firewall on the passenger side when you shift the engine back to the back motor mount holes. Other than that you should be fine. Check out this thread.

Re: small block to big block?
I went from a 250 to a 402. Bought all of the big block specific parts and just shortened the stock driveshaft to 59.5 inches. Used the stock mounting location also. It was straightforward and not difficult. Mine has a TH400 trans. I already had a 3-row radiator and the engine runs at normal temp and has not gotten hot once. I have not hauled a load with it or pulled a trailer so I cannot speak to those conditions but I don't believe it would overheat. Good luck with your swap.
