WTB: 60-66 Chevy Tailgate
 

Local Southern California guys:
I am looking for a 60-66 Chevy tailgate with the original white lacquer paint still on it. If it's lacquer-checked and the paint is faded and the primer is showing through, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. It must be straight, though.

My '64 was missing the original tailgate when I bought it. I have a tailgate that's in really nice shape, but it's primered. There's no way I can match the factory paint in a "fauxtina" that will accurately match the rest of the paint on the truck. I plan on keeping the factory white on the rest of the truck.

Let me know what you've got. If you're planning on painting your truck, and you don't mind a very nice primered tailgate, we can do a trade and I'll throw in some extra parts to sweeten the deal. I'll make it worth your while.

That white one is pretty close to what I'm looking for. My bed has many spots where the paint has worn down to the primer, and it's black underneath. However, everywhere else on the truck has red primer under the white lacquer.

Too bad it's so far away. I would rather it be within reasonable driving distance.

That's a very nice offer, but let me give that some thought. I have a line on a tailgate that's local, but I can't seem to get ahold of him. I'll try to contact the seller in Sac to see if he can get me some better pictures.

I'd really prefer to trade tailgates, because if I get the one I'm looking for, then I'll have to sell my primered one. A swap is so much easier.

Ok, this is just going to frustrate you, but I saw just what you are looking for a couple nights ago while browsing the net. An original paint (patina'd white) tailgate for sale. The trouble is, I have no idea where it was. Craigslist? Ebay? Other? I would not even bring it up without better info, but I think it's what you want, and it's out there as we speak. (or at least it was 2-3 nights ago). The tailgate is pictured in the ad standing on end outside with the worn black Chevrolet letters showing. It wasn't hugely expensive either.

Do you look through the local L.A, Orange County, and Inland Empire Craigslist listings? Those are the ones I look at, and I haven't seen it. That doesn't mean it wasn't there, though. I'll check again, then prowl ebay.

When searching, I generally look nationwide. If I had a regular search pattern I'd just do it again and there it would be, but lately my technique is random and sporadic at best. I really need to put some time into finding a new effective search engine since my old one (Sitemash) went down. I know I'm missing all kinds of deals and parts. (any help?, pm me, anybody?)
The gate we are talking about probably wasn't local, but when looking for something that specific, you gotta get it wherever it is.
P.s. - love those animal style DD's too.

try searchtempest for craigslist... it allows you to search nationwide and set your search range

There was a white gate in Tulsa Oklahoma for 75 bucks I didn't mention it before because you were looking for local

Funny, but now that I see those CL ads you put up, I can't be sure. It very well may have been the one from Merced ...or Portland. I do remember it was standing on end though. ...sheesh, that's embarrassing.

That one in Merced is exactly what I'm looking for, but it's 340 miles each way. I would prefer it to be within a reasonable driving distance. I did an on-line quote with Greyhound and it came back at $80.55.

I got a reply email yesterday from a guy in San Diego that said he has an original white tailgate. I asked him to send me pictures.

I say go turn a bunch of cans and bottles in for some extra cash and buy the one that's EXACTLY what you want. I mean, how often does it happen that the perfect thing shows up right when you need it? You'll forget the money soon enough, but you probably won't forget the gate if you let it get away.

Lindsey was the guy with the doors. I didn't even think to give him a call! Not sure if he'll have a white tailgate, but it never hurts to ask.

I think that taigate is in Ceres or modesto. Again if u like i can pick up if we can set it up for thursday after 3:00. headed to L.A. & Mira Loma. which is not as far as Ceres CA. Just talked to dude he gets out at 3:00. so if you really want it i can pick up, No problem.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who posted on my thread with all the hot tips and information. We all have a common interest, and we all team up to help each other. This site is great!

I have decided to buy the tailgate that's in Merced. One of our members Randy (perro13) has graciously offered to pick it up for me on his way down to L.A. Thank You, Randy!

oem4me: You are so right. Reading your post made me decide to drop the hammer and get it. I am shocked at how many patina'd white tailgates I found, but none were as perfect (for my truck) as the one I'm getting. If I would have given up, I would have always been bugged about "the one that got away".
