Dash Disassembly Question

Hello and thanks in advance for your advice,

I'm pulling a bunch of stuff off of and out of my 72 chevy dash to replace with new and I'm having trouble figuring out how to remove the top center AC vent and the ash tray mechanism. I searched for a thread about this but was unable to find one. Does anybody have photos, descriptions, or know of a thread that could help with this?

Thanks again

I think Andy said you have to pull the radio to get to the center a/c vent.

I'll try pulling the radio first then, thanks. I just didn't want to mess-up the paint on the dash guessing on some of this stuff.

I got the ashtray itself out ok, that was easy. I'll try removing radio and looking for those speed nuts to get the mechanism out, thanks.

I think he was telling you how to get the ashtray and the center vent out. The ashtray itself is the only thing that is removable. The other part(ashtray holder) is welded or rivited in I think.

The ash tray bracket has 4 screws holding it in. The center vent has 2 nuts on the back of it.

Re: Dash Disassembly Question

the ash tray mechanism on my truck has two screws on top and looks like spot welding on the bottom. It would be nice to remove it for better access, but it's not critical so far. I will take a second look to see if I can find two more screws at the bottom.

Thanks,

Gary

Re: Dash Disassembly Question

The ash tray does have 4 screws and I learned something else. I tried cleaning my chrome center AC vent with chrome cleaner, and guess what... it's not metal, it's plastic. It took the "chrome" stuff right off of the plastic and ruined it, ha! It seems that the center part is metal which gives it weight, but the outside is plastic, so be careful all who wish to clean their interior chrome.

I guess I'll be buying a new one of these.

Chrome was gone on mine, too. I just painted it silver.

Re: Dash Disassembly Question

Some ashtray housings are welded in. The center ac vent has two nuts on the back of it. The front will then pull out and the back of it will drop down behind the dash.
