Spring pads
 

I need to buy new spring pads for my new axle. The pads that the leaf springs sit on. I am putting in a 3/4 ton axle out of a 76 chevy and the pads are 42 1/2 inches on center and I need 40 1/2 inches, so I have to cut the old ones off and weld on new ones. Problem is, the old ones are cast iron and I am not doing a very good job of saving them when I am cutting them off. Does anybody know where I can get a new set of spring pads, preferably stamed steel, cause its easier to weld on than cast is. I guess I may need shock mounts as well.

I think I found some on evilbay, ther are for a 3.5 inch tube, and are 6 1/2 inches long. mine measures 3.4 with my calipers, and 5 inches long. They are for a Dana 70, and I'm pretty sure mine is a 14 bolt, if not its a dana 60, either way its not a 70. I think they should fit. I checked out the summit ones, one for a 3.5 inch tube, but it was 7 inches long. Not sure if the lenght matters a whole lot.

Take your time when welding on that axle tube, so as not
to cause any warpage.

Get these http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/...ch_p_1485.html they have different sizes and 3 holes for different setups middle being a stock setup i used them on my 05 FF swap http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=481550, as far as welding like 78K20 said be careful i tack welded them in place let it cool for a bit then welded one bead on one side then switched and did the other side only one bead and let it cool for awhile because the tubes do get warm and i think they're only 1.5in the tack welds kept them from pulling up on the other side, and as you can tell there's a restart on one of them which i do not prefer but since mine was in the truck i didn't feel like taking it out but if you can just get a mig welder and weld them vertically down it will lay flat be easier look nicer and hold fine

Yeah I have been thinking about the welding. I dont want to warp the tubes, I have a mig at the shop, I think I will tack both sides like Mr. 205 said. I think I may weld half of one side, switch sides, do half, then go back and weld the other halves. Just to keep the heat down.

Also make sure you keep the pinion angle right, even a small change can do some BIG damage. Coop
