1963 4X4 bell housing.
I have a 1963 Gmc 4X4 with a 6cyl 235CI with a 4 speed manual transmission. Is there a bell housing I can use to swap to a SBC?

Re: 1963 4X4 bell housing.
EDIT: See below posts for correct info on 235s. I based my prior response on assuming 235 & 250 shared bellhousing pattern.
The bell housing bolt pattern should be the same. I just bolted up a 97 small block T56 to my 250 with no problems. |
Re: 1963 4X4 bell housing.
I would double check in terms of the 235. I would agree with the above If yours was a 250. However, 1963 was the last year for the 235 and then only in the 4x4. It is my understanding that the new sixes that came out in 63, which will interchange with the SBC, are entirely different from the 235.
That said, they did use the same 4 speed until about 1968 or so, so the 235 bell housing may interchange. Or, your tranny may bolt up to a later SBC with a 4 speed bell housing. Good luck. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: 1963 4X4 bell housing.
I had a 235 in a 1958 and the B/H was not compatible with a sbc. any 55 and up v8 truck with side mounts should work. must be a truck! 55-57 cars are similar but use different side mounts. the trans mount on both housings are the same. if using a starter thats bolts to the block some mods have to be done.
