Re: chevy 292
Six Cylinder Engine Suffix info is real hard to find online. I tried last night for about a half hour. My knowledge is basically '72 and back and until last night, I never even heard of a Suffix like yours "FUT" that started with an "F". I thought it might have been mis-read as all the 3-Digit ones I'm familiar with start with "C" for Car or "T" for Truck. In this case, being a 292, it wouldn't be a "C" as I was sure of that. I finally did find some "F's" to my surprise and they were in the years of '83 and '84. They were listed for C-20's only though and close, but no "FUT". My only guess now would be that you may have a 1-Ton or larger engine from the years '83 or '84. Unless someone else can find something that I might have missed, the only way to find out for sure would be in the Chevy Truck Service Manual. All of my books end at '72, although I have one that starts in '73 but it is in deep storage and not real handy to get at.

Re: chevy 292
By the way, the first part, "F1213" is kind of easy. "F" is Flint, MI and "1213" is December 13th.

Re: chevy 292
179m20, I hit the same wall as bill. I have a field book for 6cyl chevy suffix codes, but no FUT. There are many 3 letter suffix codes starting with F. All were 1984, 250 or 292.
If your trying to just ID the block, you can narrow it down with the casting number and date code. |
Re: chevy 292
UT is code for '65 thru '68 292 with powerglide auto trans.

Re: chevy 292
Thanks to all for your input. Just trying to figure out where the engine originated and from what model. casting on the block is 352194 and dated J 23 4...........joe

Re: chevy 292
The "353194" lists as a 292 from '73 to '84. The "J234" is October 23, 1984, although a Casting Number that late in the year should actually mean that you have an '85 Engine.
In the early years a Casting Number Date Listing lists it as a Model Year. Not sure how they called it in the later years. Bill |
Re: chevy 292

Re: chevy 292
These are the only "F's" I could find any where online. I tried to copy and paste the 292 section only, but it wouldn't copy right. Although were are referring to 292's, there is also some other good Engine Code info on here. Sure enough the '74 Engines do start with "T" and if there was a "TUT" I would ask the OP to recheck the number, but there is no "TUT" listed, even though there is no "FUT" listed either. That is why I believe, as long as all the info given has been correct, that he very well could have a 1-Ton or larger 292. I'll try to dig out some books one of these nights.

Re: chevy 292
l79m20, to be double sure, post a picture of your engine if you can. If it's in original condition, someone on the board here could probably identify it as an '80's engine.

179m20, Is there any chance your FUT code is TUF? I know it's a longshot, just want to rule it out. Would the color of the block be a tell. On a small chevy it would, but I don't know about the 292. also I'm thinkin when the casting number spans more that 9 years the date code goes to 5 digits. I could be wrong about that. |
Re: chevy 292
He may have one of the lost or unknown codes like I have on my truck.
I have a 78 C20 with 350 suffix TDS. engine is original to truck. nobody can find it anywhere, either. |
