Bagged truck with a suburban gas tank

I have an 81 Chevy swb pickup that is bagged with a step notch.
I recently acquired a suburban gas tank to replace the factory saddle tank. I plan to raise the bed floor so mounting the tank from the top of the bed for extra ground clearance would probably be my best option.

I would greatly appreciate any experienced advice as to going about this procedure, and any help to get it to fit. Extra tips and/or pictures would be appreciated as well.

I tried using a suburban gas tank in my short bed only to find out that it would not fit. Before u remove your bed and do all that extra work just make sure it will fit. Otherwise I would get a blazer tank.

Not sure because your raising the bed floor but I just thought I would throw it out there.

Re: Bagged truck with a suburban gas tank

There are 3 different sized suburban tanks
25, 32, and 40 gallon

Copied from classicparts.com
"25 gallon tanks measure 29"x28"x11".
31 gallon tanks measure 29"x28"x13".
40 gallon tanks measure 35"x29"x13""

The 2 smaller ones will fit in a stock or lowered short bed.
The 40 gallon one won't fit a short bed unless it's lifted.

Re: Bagged truck with a suburban gas tank

This evening I did some modifications to be able to use the suburban gas tank above the frame rails on my bagged truck. (above the frame for extra ground clearance)
So I thought I'd share what I figured out.

I started out by temp. bracing the frame, then I took the rear support, turned it backwards then moved it 5 inches or so rearward.
Then I removed the spare tire holder.
Then I took a price of 1x1 square tubing and mounted it under the frame in the same location the spare tire holder was. (I am not finished securing it, so there will be more than just one tank strap)

You can see in the last pic that the tank does not hang at all below the frame, which will really give me some peice of mind.
