What's wrong with my 4WD?
A while ago I put my truck into 4WD and something popped....I had to drive home a few miles making a loud thunking noise all the way. The noise continued even when I put it back into 2WD.
First I thought the problem was the hub, but I took that apart and everything looks well. So then I took out the front drive shaft, and now it seems to drive ok. What does that say about my problem? I took out the drive shaft and the thunk noise went away. Is there something wrong with my T-case? |

Check yer U-joints! Front and rear shaft. My money is on the front though, took the front shaft out and the noise went away, so points to the shaft, or at least the front axle.

Is there any way to see if the U joint is bad besides replacing it? The one I have looks ok, but I don't know what I'm looking for...

with a u joint there will eather be extar movement or a visable sign

Re: What's wrong with my 4WD?
Take the driveshaft out and physically move the U-joint around, look for stiffness, twist the caps, see if they still have lubrication in them. The front axle u-joints you can check by lifting one side off and turning the wheel to one side and then spinning the tire by hand, see how it feels.
