Grenade-loc.....

Well the pin got pulled on the grenade-loc yesterday on my way back from Oshawa. Luckly i caught it before it completley went off. Ring and pinion are ok just the left side gear and the gear for the governor. I believe these trucks came with 28 spline axles (10 bolt) and an 8.5" ring? I have to replace the carrier and was wondering what to replace it with. I have heard of guys pulling the carriers out of the 90-94 impallas but are they a irect fit to the 73-87 10 bolt that resides in our trucks. What all would you guys recommend?

I just went with an eaton posi in the 12 bolt I put together for my truck. Nice setup but it was about 500 bucks. It depends what you want to spend, you could probably rebuild that for quite a bit less. Some of the big cars did have 8.5 10 bolts so robbing a carrier from one of them may be an option, just have to make sure its the correct carrier for your gear ratio.

Looks like the real problem you had was moisture and rust. Your fluid looks like liquid rust. This is prob why your rear diff met its demise

That year of impala could have a 8.5 rear end in it and yes it would be a direct fit.I put a posi unit out of a 70ish camaro in mine , way better then the gov locks they put in the truck rear ends but ya a 8.5 car or truck is all interchangable as 76 has mentioned above

Your pictures look almost like a modern Auburn locking diff unit.
They don't look like a G80 Eaton Gov-Lock.
The 10bolt G80 Gov-Locks have a pair of weights on rods that look like this when they grenade.

The water, mud, and rust slurry didn't help anything. ;)
