np-205 shifter ?

When did the General change the np-205 shifter from the curved style in the
'71/'72 trucks and Blazers to the straighter styled stick as in the later square bodied trucks? Are they compatible and interchangeable from one era truck to another? Curious on this, thanks for any replies.

I'm not sure when they changed, but they all bolt up the same. In '70 GM put some different ones in some vehicles that bend towards the driver and those interchange. As long as it comes straight up to above the boot it should work,as far as lining up in the floor.

Those are the 1970 versions of np205 shifter which are different from the 71-72 shifters.
Not sure specific year they went to the straight shifter, I have seen a couple 73-74's with the bent, but they could have been added. Trevor

Thanks for the pictures and added info Trevor. As long as the stick works and fits the shifter hole it's all good but I guess I prefer the look of the '71/'72 curved sticks. Funny how personal taste works on things.

I like the 71/72 type, too. It's about all I've ever had. It's a good position for use as well. You'd have to reach farther forward for the straight ones, right? It's been so long that I've run a '70 with that shifter I don't recall how that was. I'm thinking it would be pretty cool. I have a painted and a chrome one and am thinking to try it out in my '72 just for kicks.

Re: np-205 shifter ?

The only difference in the 70' auto tc shifter and the 71-72's is the lowest bend. The 70's have a longer bend in them to make the shifter directly center in the hump, and the 71-72's are more offset to the passenger side of the hump. The 70' manual with the crazy bend to the drivers knee is similar to 70' auto lower bend, but the obvious bend. 73?-87 np205 shifters will work though. I had one in my old 72'. Trevor

1973 4x4's came with a straight stick. Probably the year that it started
