oh god what did I break.
Problem. On the way to school today in my truck (77 Silverado, 350) I hit the same bump I always do, no problem right? Next light (1oo yards) as soon as I stop the truck starts shaking back and forth. It literally vibrates more than the 67 Chevelle 454 we have. It has never done that before and only shakes in idle. Driving it is smooth and fine.
I have no idea what the problem might be but also today it started smelling like a coal plant. I have the windows down everyday (a/c doesn't work) and it has never done that before. I really hope there was no one behind me with the windows down because they got smelled out. Please any help would be appreciated. |
Re: oh god what did I break.
ive played around with my points ignition (yea i know ha) and if they arent right it can run like hell and rattle your teeth. i think ignition would be a god place to start

Re: oh god what did I break.
Check your plug wires. You might have one that is shorted on the header or exhaust manifold. A V8 will run quite smooth on 7 cylinders off idle. Rough while idling though. I'm thinking somewhere in the ignition system.

Re: oh god what did I break.
I agree with checking your plug wires. Had the exact same problem; rough idle/misfire. Looked at the wires and one of them was burnt through. Replacing them solved the problem!

broken exhaust?

Re: oh god what did I break.
Went through and checked the wires to make sure they were all plugged in. They were but I went ahead and got new plugs/wires from O'Riellys. Going to try to get them installed ASAP. Hopefully nothing breaks in the meantime.

Re: oh god what did I break.
Check for a restricted exaust,or an egr problem,or a broken/cracked pcv valve/hose.

Re: oh god what did I break.
Gotta check your cap and rotor too. Kind of sounds like a misfire.

Re: oh god what did I break.
Another problem surfaced today. I haven't had any time to put in the new plugs and wires but I'm having a drop in power and acceleration. From idle if I don't really mash on it there is a delay and it acts like it wants to die. I found this out after it died halfway out of my driveway. Would this also be part of the ignition problem?
Thanks guys. |

Re: oh god what did I break.
Well it died today. Right now I am at my grandma's waiting on my stepdad to come pick me up. Pulled apart the air cleaner and opened the butterfly to see if it got air and it died at idle with it open. It just won't run. Thinking the fuel filter is clogged or maybe the fuel pump isn't working? Not sure now....

Re: oh god what did I break.
Vac advance ... Take the cap/rotor off and check the weights are swinging freely
Remove the Vac line @ the carb , blow and suck see if it moves in out . I also removed the line ,pump to carb, flushed it out. Fulla rusty dirty gas. Also may wana check rubbers areas of 3/8 line. Should hear bubbles if you blow air back in that 3/8 again by mouth This checks for leaks tank to carb Try pouring gas in carb does it run?.. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: oh god what did I break.
Sounds like you stirred up some gunk in the float bowls, and it got into the idle circuit of the carb.
