14bolt semi and 14 bolf ff
 

realizer after the fact (still kinda new to the building part of all of this) that the 14 bolt that I got for free and swapped in last winter is a SF and not a FF. So my questions is what can I do minus swapping a FF to make it just as strong with out spending my savings. Thanks in advance for the help guys

Nothing. You will never be able to make the SF as strong as a FF. 3 pinion bearings, 10.5" ring gear, etc. are just not replaceable.

But with that said, you will probably not break the SF unless you are just hammering it with big tires, lots of power, and traction out the wazoo. Most likely if you replace the Gov-Bomb with some real limited slip or locker you will be good for years to come. I have the SF swapped into my Jimmy. It is way more stout than the 12 bolt. Except for the aforementioned Gov-Lok, I am very happy with the swap. Now if I can just find an Elocker or Eaton posi cheap, I'll be done.

real quick is there a way to eliminate the C clips in these to upgrade to something else

I don't know of a C clip eliminator for the SF 14, but honestly, those 33 spline axles it comes with are pretty stout. And WAY stronger than a 12 bolt. For an occasional offroader where you don't want to damage the body, you probably won't be breaking a SF 14 axle.

building for beach trips and playing in the woods, thanks again for the help. So rear locker will be going on my list of to do's for after the summer. I guess I will run it till I break it and see what happens.

Please excuse my ignorance-I'm new to the truck world too. Can you expalin the differece between a full -float (I know what a FF is) and a semi-float?

if your just playing around with the semi floater you'll be fine you won't break it till you get it locked with low gears alot of power and a bad situation as for the differences of full floater and semi floater here ya go http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...ble/index.html its towards the top of the page a few sentences down

If you now how to use it,you will wear the Gov-loc out before you break it. Just know what you have and use it accordingly. The Gov-loc is as strong as any other device "once engaged". It's how you let it engage that matters. It will get you out of spots an open rear will leave you stuck. That's what it's for and that's what it will do. It's not for rock crawling,but works great in slippery terrain like mud and snow,as well as get you going in sand. Just don't tromp it until it engages and you are good. Once you realize the wheels spinning,let it spin and don't mash it. Just give it enough spin till you feel the rear engage and right about then you will also feel the added traction and then do what you gotta do.

Anybody know what a full float 14 Bolt is worth? Compared to the 14 bolt semi-float?
Have a chance to get a full floater and wondering if the guy is in the ballpark....

I see full float axles go from $100-$300. I've also seen people give them away and seen $500 asked for them. The fact is,they are common and plentiful. So,that keeps the cost down. You can also pay the same for a semi-floater,which isn't as strong,yet is all most people need realistically. They have held up under many a 3/4t hard working truck for decades. So,proof is in the pudding. They also give better ground clearance. I was down on semi-floaters from the first time I saw them. I saw them as GM cheaping out. I have been about heavy duty from way back. I mean overkill is best is my school of thought. I have a full-floater sitting that was intended for a swap into my '91 Suburban to replace the semi-floater. That vehicle has been retired and it's running gear lives on in my '85 Jimmy. I could have installed the full-floater then but decided I'd rather have the Gov-loc than an open rear. I figure on seeing what happens and I'm not too sure I'll ever end up needing to switch.

The two post above me are accurate. I just picked one up a few months back for $150. There are alot of them out there, some people think they have something rare or something and try to sell them for 500$, but you can get them for way cheaper than that. Just keep looking.
