Drop Spindle disc brakes maintaining 6 lug?
 

hey everyone, i have a 1966 c10 swb that i am looking to buy a set of drop spindles for. My main intention is to maintain 6 lug 6x5.5" so that not only can I run stock wheels but i can run any obs 4x4 wheels or all nbs/nnbs 6 lug wheels. Only problem I have realized is the size of the front hubs fitting in a newer style rim. Do drop spindle kits reduce the diameter of the hub so I can run new style wheels or am i always gonna have to run wheel spacers to combat that? :chevy:

I'm running 6-lug with drop spindles. Early Classic Enterprise has the 5 or 6 lug option.

When I rebuilt my rear end (ring and pinion, axles, bearings, everthing new lug nut to lug nut) I wanted to stay 6-lug so I wouldn't have to pack two spares around. A couple of years later when I decided to convert to disc brakes, I kept them 6-lug for the same reason (had a new 6-lug rear end). Then decided to go to drop spindles, so that was another re-do. That's why it pays to have a plan......

Edit: Never answered the original question. I'm running new Centerline rims without a spacer.

Thanks, I was looking at CPP drop spindles I presume they would be the same and would have a smaller hub. Also I would like keep factory rear end which also has a larger hub. I think I'm going to pull the axles and get them machined so that they sit flush with the rear drum. Any other alternatives?:chevy:

Any aftermarket 6 lug wheel is going to have a center bore hole big enough to clear as they are also made to clear 4x4 hubs....

I'm more concerned about the length because nbs silverados have shorter hubs then c10's which could potentially not allow you to get the center caps on and thank you for your input on CPP. I'll take that into consideration when buying. I knew summit carried spindles but never really considered them till now.

How far are you hoping to drop it? I installed the front a-arms and disc brake setup from a 70 or 71 Suburban. It seemed to drop it about 1 inch with this alone and I installed 2 inch drop springs, which seems about 3 inches total drop. The drop springs ride great and don't seem to bottom out. I replaced the rotor with a 6 lug to keep all four wheels alike. I wanted to keep the wheels that I had. Good Luck

I was planning on doing 2.5" spindles and 4" coils in the rear. I hope that will sit just slightly lower in the front. I want it be able to clear 20" wheels with a decent profile tire. Rubber bands look silly in my opinion and ride like a lumber wagon.:chevy:

The NBS trucks use a unit bearing hub, hence the shorter snout that sticks out from the wheel. Most of the drop spindles (5 or 6 lug) use the same rotor blank, so the snout is likely going to stick out the same. For most 4x4 style wheels, this won't be a problem but trying to run factory type wheels, that could be an issue.

I was hoping to run a set of 2006 chrome SS Silverado 20"s if i can find a set, so they should work fine then. Or if I buy a new set of new rims. Just not sure what would look cool on my truck when its done.

Sweet looking truck!!!

I think the biggest issue you are likely to run into is the wheel offset. Most modern trucks have a very high offset compared to earlier trucks. When you start putting these modern wheels on, the get sucked into the wheel wells and cause rubbing issues and just look all wrong. With correct spacers, you can get them to fit correctly and look right.

Unless you get them really cheap, I would test fit a set before I would actually put down the money.

That doesn't look bad, any idea on the spacers if it has any? Im really having a tough time deciding on wheels. I want at least 20"s but i want to do something different. SS rims would look nice, but like you said they may suck the wheels in too much. If i can get away without spacers i will. I was thinking helos as an alternative with colour matched blue (same as the truck) inserts. But I'm not sure if that would look geeky or not. Any opinions? (in 20"s not 22"s like the link)
