LS swap questions
 

so when some of yall bought your ls style motors 5.3s 6.0 etc...
where did some of you mouth the pcm port thats normily in the cab?

did some of you guys mount it somewhere else like in a console or something?
did some of yall have to get one from somewhere else is it apart of hte harness.

im looking into this route as a solution ive found a 2000 5.3/4l60e from a 2wd burban. to go into my 82 swb i think ive got one helluva score here for the price for both trans and engine and pcm and all that.

lets just say under 1000$ an i know the guy whos sellin the motor

i can always add cam and heads for better performance

i guess i could contact places like nelson performance for tunes
can i get the torqe management system whiped?

my comm port is underhood, mounted next to my engine fuses and ecm. This way it can be easily accessed underhood by the tuner etc, and my cable for the scanguage reaches without a problem.

For tuning, get a dyno tune, canned tunes are fine to get you running but always leave something to be desired for performance. Yes you can remove tq management.

My OBDII port is under the dash just to the right of my gas pedal. The port only requires 12v, ground and one wire from the PCM called serial data.

dyno tune is that something i can do myself or what?? or do i sned the pcm off

would switching to the ls be a wise decision or?

A dyno tune is where they put your car on a dyno and tune it, so unless you have a dyno then no, you can't do it yourself. You could do a live tune with HPTuners or something like that by driving it and tuning but it takes some time to learn how to do it right. Mail order tunes will get the engine running and are usually pretty close, but some HP and MPG is usually left on the table.

Oh, and your in the LS swap section so you're probably not going to get an unbiased opinion here, we're all going to say its a.good idea.

If you own a dyno, then you could tune it yourself...

You need to go a tuner for a dyno tune; mail out tunes will be fine to remove vats etc and get your car setup for the new equipment (no emissions etc). But the performance gains are usually lower, and you don't have a local source to re-tune should you change equipment or need to calibrate things like torque management, which is half preference.

I called about the combination at lunch it sold.
Guess the 5.3 wasn't for me Damn.

I think since the 82 is down I may go ls swap.
A deal like that i don't see often

Junkyards want 800$ motor only no harness.

Maybe I need a 6.0 I'll just have to keep looking.

What are round about prices for the puter an harness

Harnesses can be found for around$ 100, PCMs anywhere from$ 50 to$ 200 if its already had things done to it.

Have you tried carparts.com? I searched and found a 5.3 takeout with harness and ECM for $800.00 They even took it out while I was there. Mine had just a shade over 80,000 miles and was a 2004 . Good Luck in your Hunt

Problem with a newer than 2002 is the DBW throttle unless you use the trans out of donor truck. I have a race prepped 700r4 so after buying a 2004 I needed to buy a Cable drive throttle body so I can use my trans

yeah ive tried carpart and have called the local yards asking questions.

here in my area 800$ here where im at the motor only.
more with harness and pcm

i kick myself for not calling that guy earlier motor tranny harness 800$

the junkyards here are expensive i think it has to do with location.

I think the yards are finding out how popular the LS is getting and raising prices! I would call some of them and talk one on one thats how I got mine for $800.00. You might be surprised also check on shipping. Expand your search to other states and call with ?'s. I bought mine from Piper's in Bloomfield Iowa,theres also a yard named Spillmans in Bloomfield and they ship.

im about 200 miles from big city like dallas is why i think yards are high on stuff.
they are just high period on most items in this area.
i will find something ill give it more time i view craigslist alot on my phone.

im thinking more about looking for a 6.0 even if i found good engine.
for a good price without harness an pcm i could locate that somewhere else.

or switch to the carb intake kit for like 650$ ive got a turbo 350 that needs seals.
i could locate the adatpter kit an use it i suppose

ok so another question sunday im going to look at 2000 swb wrecked.
got 5.3 4l60e transmission truck still runs i think i can snatch whole thing.
it was hit on the backside from what the guy says

i think this would be a good deal cause i could use alot of parts from the engine.
and the cruse control an stuff correct? fuse box etc...

then when im done i could scrap an sell what i do not need and make some money back

so since im going this swap route could i trash my old steel fuel lines or connect on to them and use them somehow?

im back to looking for an ls motor went and looked at the wrecked truck.
had no radiator or nothing and he wanted 1200 and me pull the motor and tranny.
and i couldnt get him to drop the price

If you use an older 5.3 intake that has the built in return/regulator you can buy adapters that and change them to hose barb. If your old lines have barbs then you can use some pushlok hose. I did this on my latest build, a 51 panel on a s10 frame. I used the s10 fuel lines but installed aftermarket dual fuel pumps in the s10 tank.

you could do it with one normal fuel pump, and a transfer pump, but you'd need to make sure to run the transfer pump before you suck tank #1 dry...dual fuel gauges would help.

Might just upgrade to one blazer tank
