55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
Hey Guys - Just wanted to see what rear mount fuel tank most of ya'll are using for the 55-59 pickups.. I read somewhere that a late 60's mustang tank works well.. I would really appreciate some feedback and pics.
Thanks! -Shane |
Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
I heard that it was the 65?66 Mustang tank that would work. I would also like to know if that is correct information .

I doubt you will find a "most" used. I have used Chevy van tanks before but on this build I used a Tanks 49-51 Ford car poly tank. It doesn't hang down as far as many I've seen but still holds 17 gallons. It also allowed me to use a Hagan fuel door in the d/s rear fender and has provisions for an in tank EFI fuel pump which I need. I'm not a fan of in the bed filler locations which are easier and having the tank low enough, especially on a low truck, to use the license plate door doesn't suit me either. Many will advise you to relocate the rear crossmember to the rear, which I did, but still had room to squeeze in a receiver hitch. IMO, the question comes down to the needs of each build.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
have you tried reading some of the build threads in this forum?
most of us have frame mounted tanks, a wide variety of options used here. |

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
In my 59 long bed I went with a unit from Tank King. I'm very happy with the quality. Had to build my own mounting and straps although they do sell strapping.

Hey Ffredo - Can you tell me which tank you used from tank king.. I really like the way that fits and looks. I think I'm gonna copy you ;)
Thanks! -Shane |
Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
Check out ChuckDriver's '57 as well. He used a generic tank from 'Tanks, Inc and if I remember correctly he only has about $200 into it. And it looks really good!

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
8 used a tank for a 74 Chevy blazer. It's 20 gallons, and was less that 100 bucks.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
I love No Limit.. Rob is such a cool nice dude and really knows this stuff. I had the chance to go by the shop in March and he talked to me for an hour about my project.. gas tank looks awesome.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
I used the same as FFredo except it cames from Tanks Inc. This was my first ever install of a fuel tank and it was really easy. The tank was $215 and sending unit, fuel filler, etc. what another $25. Even included mounting straps. All in all was very easy.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
What a great thread, wish it hadn't died...
That Tanks Inc. poly Ford tank looks great! I would swap to that tank in a heartbeat but I've got a steel Tanks Inc tank already... |

Nice, I used a mustang gas tank on my 58 chevy.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
The problem with the Mustang tank is that it accepts the Ford collet type sending unt versus the universal GM 5 bolt (or is it 6?) so it won't work with the stock '55-'59 gas gauge.
I SEEM TO REMEMBER that Tanks Inc. now has a Mustang shaped tank that accepts the universal/GM sender. If they do then I think that's the way I'm gonna go.....but Chuck Driver's (JJ's) installation looks most excellent. I have no issue with bed fill. Once done my truck will never see more than a folding chair or a flat of flowers in the bed. Answered my own question. Here it is. Which ohm sender do I need for stock gas gauge? http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...rod/prd129.htm |
Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
I think Old GM is 0-30, Mid GM is 0-90 and LS Chevy is 33-240 (why, I have no idea)

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
Just checked prices. That Tanks Inc. Mustang/Universal is only $215 plus $35 for a sending unit.
No Limit's tanks are $479 for a 17 gallon and $499 for a 21 gallon. Then you still have to buy the sending unit. Basically twice the price. To me, the cheaper one is a no brainer. Question, if I were to buy a fuel injection tank I assume it would work fine with a conventional mechanical fuel pump, carbureted engine? I ask because some day in the far off future I might put a 5.3 LS engine in my truck. |
Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
Check Yogis, they had the best price for the 18 gallon aluminum tank I put in.

I lied, looked it up and I got my tank and sender from Performance On Line for $295 shipped.

Re: 55-59 Rear Fuel Tank
My kit was $337 shipped . From what I've been told , my universal mustang tank is an improved version of the original , with the feed line on the top of the tank , not on the bottom like a stock 1960s mustang tank
