Gauge clusters - New vs. Original?

I going to replace the instrument panel gauge cluster in the 1971 Chevy my son and I are working on and will be upgrading to one with a tach.

I need to clarify the one we have now is in bad shape so just adding the tach isn't going to work.

What’s the opinion of purchasing a new one from say - Classic Parts vs. purchasing a rebuilt/reconditioned unit?

Who would be a good source for a rebuilt/freshened up original one?

Thanks in advance!

I can help you with a rebuilt/freshened up one....or an all new tach conversion installed with excellent original gauges.

I think the ones from classic for around 6-800 are overpriced...I can put together a really nice one from 375-500 depending on options...

Nice.

I'm thinking refurbished gauges with a new tach might be the least expensive route. I'm not interested in vacuum or air gauges. My woodgrain bezel is in good shape so I could reuse it if that helps any.

Really wanting all the faces and needles to match and the speedometer's odometer set to zero. I would need a tach harness too.

Let me know. I can send you my contact info if we need to move this offline.

Thanks!

Bezel would definitely save a little. You could send to me to install or I can send the gauges with a cracked original on them (always safer to ship with a bezel on IMHO) I have a few speedos set to zero and several harnesses. Do you have points or HEI ignition (harness is different)

One point on the aftermarket tachs...if you do have HEI or plan to switch to it at some point....

A couple of vendors advertise no warranty on the tachs if used with HEI...and some members have had their tachs go up in smoke. Other vendors have no such disclaimer. There are a couple different ones out there so it must be in the circuitry/wiring...

I've never had an issue with a factory tach and HEI though...If you do choose a factory tach I charge 50 more for factory tachs vs aftermarket...
