1970 Chevy AKA "Hammer"
Ok Ive had truck for a little bit and figured I would go ahead and start a build thread. She is a 1970 chevy that I have decided to nickname "Hammer" (Yes I know there is a sweet little road runner with the name Hammer) A little about me first. I worked for a shop called KillerRidez doing air ride set ups on all sorts of cars and trucks and my father and uncle have built many cars from the ground up in their lives so needless to say Ive around custom cars along time. I decided when I bought this truck that I would build it exactly the way I wanted and I didn't care how long it took. My first though was put this thing on the ground and shave everything and put a little 5.3 in a drive it. I bought my drop member from Nate at PorterBuilt and then Nate went and made a coil-over version of it and all my thoughts of laying it out went out the window. So I gave Nate a call and asked what I needed to do make my extreme dropmember to take coil over instead of bags. Nate said its no big deal Ill make you a set of custom upper mounts.(Should be here in a week or two) So I ordered the control arms and the upper mounts and went to town on the frame. I still have alot more to order from him and when money comes in it all goes to him. lol. As for the body I started shaving the firewall (almost done just a few more holes to fill. I have new rockers to install when I get everything sandblasted and primed and back on the frame. I plan on shaving the parking lights and gas fill. The drip rail will most likely stay put though. As for the door handles Im still making up my mind on those. Engine and tranny wise I thought about the 5.3 but since Ive basically said that money didnt matter on this one I will go with the 6.0 with the 4l80 trans. I plan on this thing riding about 4-5 inches of the ground and I want it to handle like a vet. I didnt take to many pics in the beginning but Ive tried to start taking more since Ive been back at it.

Painted pics and some pics of my little brothers first car being built for him. Hes 14 so my dad has decided a 65 fastback with a 2002 gt as a donor for the drive train would be a great car.

Nice project, i'm a big fan of the pro touring style trucks. I really like the firewall, shaving that upper seam really cleans it up.

I lov the fastback models the best

Got a good deal on a 5.3 with a 4l60 trans. Picked it up tonight Ill post pics later. This weekend I started putting the frame back together still waiting on some parts from Nate but hopefully they will show up sometime this week or next. On a side note the wife has put a hold on the checking account for 2 months. lol Oh well I have enough to keep me busy until then.

Ok well where do I start first. Lets start with the engine situation. The 5.3 that I got 2 weeks ago turned out to be a 4.8 and lets just say after having to trick the guy that sold me the engine into showing up at his shop and after a " Come to Jesus " meeting with the guy I ended up getting my money back on the engine. Then after finding a couple of other "5.3" that were actually 4.8's I came across a 2008 LY6 6.0 with the L92 heads complete from pan to intake with computer and harness and all lines for 1200$. So anyways Im alot happier with this decision. I wanted the 6.0 to begin. Anyways thats pretty much all Ive done for the last 2 weeks is engine and trans stuff. More Porterbuilt stuff should show up this week which will allow me to install the engine and trans and then I can start on the cab.

Got my new upper mounts, control arms and crossmembers from Porterbuilt on tuesday. I work 3 days a week and then have 4 off for the truck and honey do's. So I wanted to have everything blasted, painted, and installed on the frame by sunday. Well Im ahead of schedule. Yesterday I blasted and painted everything and then today I installed it all. Needless to say Im wore out. lol. Tomorrow Ill start cleaning the bottom of the cab and try to get it in primer so I can mount the cab. Here is some pics

That looks like a pretty good way to stiffen things up a little. Are you doing a stock build on the 5.3 or are you gonna throw a little at it?

nice score on the 6.0 Ly6!! :metal:
have you decided on a cam?? |
Re: 1970 Chevy AKA "Hammer"
Thanks guys. It still has a long way to go. Still have to buy a couple more stuff from Nate. I started buffing and blasting the bottom of the cab today. Hopefully Ill have it in primer and hopefully on the frame tomorrow but Ill settle for just primed. lol. As for the 6.0 right now my plans are a ls3 intake and injectors, 90mm tb,ls7 lifters mill the heads .030 to get my compression up a bit, long tube headers and Im deleting the vvt and havent decided on a cam yet. Goal is 450ish hp. Should be enough for what I have planned.

Well I got a ton done this weekend. Alot more than I had planned. Finished buffing the bottom of the cab and got it in primer. Then I mounted the cab on the frame. Needless to say I cant wait to go back to work tomorrow so I can rest. lol. Have a wedding to go to next week but Ill work on it when I can. Need to get the rest of the body on so I can start with the sheet metal repair.

Well didnt get as much done as I wanted to with the whole wedding stuff this weekend. I primed my core support and installed it. Then I started on the doors. The passenger side is in the best shape. I just had to replace the lower part of the door where they put 2 speaker holes in it and fix a little bit of the bottom side where some rust had ate through. Next week Ill finish the passenger and drivers door and get them in primer and start on the cab rockers and corners and fill in the gas cap and random holes.
