Steering wheel interchange

Hi Fellas, anyone on this board know the interchangeability of 50s GM steering wheels on early GM columns??

I'm just toying with the idea of swapping my GMC steering wheel for something else GM 50s to early 60s ie cadilliac, pontiac, buick, olds, basically a classic wheel with chrome. BTW i'm still running my original column.

I am dealing with this too. Look at my build thread, last few posts (614 & 624). Splines are the same, issue is the depth of the dish. 47-56 were relatively flat. Starting in 57 cars and truck got dished (deeper) steering wheels. Not much, only about 3" difference, but enough on mine to make a difference. My 82 eldo column is shorter than standard GM columns of the same time but the difference in on the firewall side, not the dash side.

Red I've got a 62 impala wheel on my original collum. Looks like it was meant to be there except for the impala insignia.

OrrieG & meter swinger, thanks for the updates, I have previously read both your threads. My original GMC steering wheel is flat & as I'm getting older my stomach is getting bigger:o so I will be sticking with a flat wheel. I kinda dig the 53-54 Pontiac Star chief wheels atm.
Heres a pic of my original wheel.

Most GM wheels from the mid 80's and earlier will fit on the steering shaft but many of them don't fit you right when you sit in the seat of the truck with a stock column.
You really need a pretty flat wheel for it to work right. The best fitting non truck wheel I had in the 48 was a 59 Corvette wheel that someone offered way too much money for after I had had it on the truck for a few years.

Mr48chev, funny you should mention 59 Vette, very nice wheel, that was one type I had my eye on untill I realised they're out of my price range.

Here is the trial fit photo of the 48 wheel on the 82 Eldo column from last night.

Re: Steering wheel interchange

The only reason I had that one Red is that a friend in Texas gave it to me when he was building a drag car out of a 59 Corvette hulk. I'd like to find a larger diameter Nardi wood wheel with flat spokes for the 48 but they are beyond spendy. I have a Nardi wheel in my 71 that was in a Nardi series Miata that I got on Ebay and love it.

I love it. I machined a ring to make it all work that ididit now offers I think...
