Changing shocks absorbers - '72 C20
 

Hi guys,

My '72 C20 bounces around alot. I know it's the nature of the truck to have a rough ride, but I think changing the old shock absorbers will help.
How hard is it to change the shocks, can I do it in my garage? I have to change the shocks at all 4 corners. Is there any recommend brand?

I have stock height trucks and have used Monroe Gas LT shocks through Advance. They are reasonable and work well. You can do it in your garage. Soak down the nuts good with penetrating oil before you start. Work safely with jack stands on the axle and a-frames, not just a jack. You may need a breaker bar to bust the nuts loose if they haven't been off in decades. I take the wheels off (you can remove them one at a time) to facilitate access in and out from underneath.

My Monroe magnums came with new upper mounts for the fronts. Be prepared to remove the old and install the new as the new(mount)has captivating fasteners(no lock washers)Easy job otherwise, I left my C10 on the ground to do it.

I've had excellent service from KYB Gas-A-Just shocks which contrary to their name, are not adjustable. They are a bit firmer than OEM and have great rebound control. The ride will soften up a tad with use but they retain good control (they don't get mushy). And they're reasonably priced for a high-quality shock.

I've also heard good stuff about Monroe Sensa-Tracs.... I just haven't owned them.

I've heard great things about Bilsteins. I tried to order last year but they were on backorder. Maybe later this year I'll get them.
Right now I have Ranchos. They're okay I guess.

What about coil overs? Are they a softer ride? Do they make them for a K10?
