Trip Odometer Conversion
2 Attachment(s)
After seeing a thread on here a month or two ago about a speedo with a trip odometer, I thought I'd give it a try. I think they're useful, especially if you drive alot. Instead of the reset knob coming out the front of the speedo dial, I used a cable and mounted the knob like the speed warning set knobs are. It was relatively simple to do, and my stock 1970 speedo head had all the holes drilled already for the trip odometer parts. I used an ebay donor speedo for the parts, and the cable is a reproduction. No non-GM parts were used. I just installed it yesterday and have already put 22 miles on it testing it out.

Re: Trip Odometer Conversion
You did a great job! That looks like something that would have been factory.

Re: Trip Odometer Conversion
That trip knob looks like the ones on the speed warnings. Did that come with the speedometer? What is the speedometer out of? Great job!

The parts for the conversion came from a 68-77 Corvette speedo. I used the trip odometer reel and reset gear and mounted them in the truck speedo frame. The reset cable is for a 64-67 Corvette. When I was searching for parts, I found that Impalas and Caprices from this era also use the same basic set-up, but only the Corvette parts dealers were selling complete cables and other parts.
Here is a picture of the truck speedo frame with the trip odometer parts installed & the reset cable screwed in. I had to tap an existing hole in the truck speedo with 3/8"-24 threads at an angle for the reset cable. The other holes were already there & all I had to do was install the parts. There are a few other things you have to do to convert. I'll try to make a how-to after the weekend if there is interest. |

Looks pretty cool. Would really like to see a super detailed write up on this. So if you didn't take pictures of the build, go ahead and take it all out, dismantle it and put it back together for us, with pics.
You know we would all appreciate it. Thanks! |
