How to change a tranny
Special tools needed, a walkthru would be great. Its a 98 stock 5.7 vortec engine, auto trans is slipping mostly in daytime when its hot outside, seems strange.
Does the motor have to come out to do trans swap? Thanks for the advice. Posted via Mobile Device |

Jackstands are nice, trans jack = easy on you.
Do you want step by step instructions? Smitty |

Re: How to change a tranny
Here we go, someone will add if I miss something. This is for a 2wd I assume.
1. Jack it up and place on stands 2. Drain old fluids 3. Remove driveshaft 4. Unbolt torque converter from flexplate/flywheel this also requires you to remove the access cover to get to the bolts (you may have to remove starter) 5. Unhook shift linkages and speedo wiring along with big plug on the passenger side 6. Unhook cooler lines 7. Remove trans crossmember if it can be unbolted, if not unbolt the rear mount 8. Unbolt from engine 9. Take it down All this can be done if exhaust isnt in the way, if it is, then you have to get the exhaust out of the way. You will need a big screw driver to turn the engine while you get the converter bolts out. 2wd's = easy 4wd's = long day Smitty |

Re: How to change a tranny
To ad to 7..to get tha crossmember out..place ig floor jack under tha trans pan to take tha pressure off it so you can slide tha crossmember out..but make that tha last step, cause when you do that she is fee to come out...you make have to pull tha dipstick tube.. also being a rookie.have anothet set a hands there..

Re: How to change a tranny
You will want to support the engine to keep it from tilting back too far and breaking your distributor cap. Don't forget to unplug your battery before you even put it on jack stands. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: How to change a tranny
If your using a regular floor jack find something flat and sturdy to place under the fluid pan to keep from putting a hole in it. Double check that you have unhooked all you wires. That will turn you day into a bad one real quick. Atleast it did mine.
