how to lighten the box

I have a c10 short bed that I am in the process of building and as of right now the only body I have is the cab and doors. I was thinking of ways to lighten the box. I've seen guys build a frame out of sqaure tube then mount box walls to it this might be the route in which I want to go seen's how I'm not going to haul anything (4 in drop mono's with caltracs) or tow anything (540hp lq9 with a pretty lumpy cam). How are these done? or is there another way to shave weight out of the box?

Re: how to lighten the box

Make it a flat bed with alum frame and alum diamond plate?

In all seriousness:

We took all the wood out of mine (I think yours is a steel floor).
We took all but 2 cross members out just to use them to bolt it back in place.

You could technically take the front panel out and use some thin square tube at the top and bottom just to keep it square and in shape.

Other than that, not sure what else there is to do to lighten it up. Mine is double walled in areas, So I guess that the double walling could be cut out.

Your thinking is correct. Loose the floor, remove as much of the inner wall of the bedsides as possible, and build a square tube frame to hold it all together.

Well, we cut the front panel on mine, it has no wood, tailgate. Two of us lifted it on farily easily. Retains the front x-member and the rear x-member. Take a look at my build thread and you can see that we did to the front panel. I can take more detailed pics next time. Didn't think a bout this thread when I was shooting pics today.
