4 speed swap
so i recently just picked up a borg warner super t10 with a hurst shifter and a lakewood scatter shield. im trying to find all the parts to convert my truck to a manual (its an 85 c10) and have a couple of questions.
1. i know in 85 the went to hydraulic clutch but are all the holes there if i choose to run a mechanical setup? 2. is the clutch pedal assembly the same in every year from 73-87? 3. do i have to change the column or can i just override the neutral safety switch? thank you in advance for all that offer there 2 cents -Anthony |

I had a mechanical/linkage clutch in my 85 burb for a while. The only hole I had to drill was for the clutch rod. I vaguely remember I had to modify the pedal bracket and how it bolts to the master cylinder. IIRC I had to remove two mounting studs on the bracket...or something like that...it was pretty easy.
85 went to hydraulic clutch and the mounting point for the master cylinder rod is different than on a linkage style set up. I didn't change my column. I drove out the pin that held on the gear selector and I just left it in park and then exteded the wires for the reverse lights down to the transmission. |

good call i forgot about the reverse lights. i found a set of pedals correct for the truck this morning so looks like i will be going hydraulic. now all i have to do is make it working withmy scattershield. i think lakewood sells a kit but im not sure

got a set of pedals from a member has any one put a car trans in their trucks? im having trouble finding any info on this

These Hydraulic Throwout Bearings will make it a bit easier as long as the master cylinder will support them. will save you the trouble of having to find the correct clutch fork and having to make a mounting bracket for the slave cylinder

i dont have a lot to spend so i think ill be stuck trying to frankenstein it. But that hydraulic throwout bearing would make my life a lot easier.

Also theres a member here selling a a 4 speed tilt column from what he says is late 70s early 80s truck does anyone know if that will work in my truck (85 c10)

You could use the an 85 or later squarebody truck bellhousing... Assuming the T10 has the same GM bellhousing to tranny bolt pattern as the SM465.
Your 85 has the wiper & dimmer on the column. The earlier trucks had wipers on the dash with a dimmer button on the floor... If you're into doing some serious re-wiring you could make it work but I wouldn't recommend it. If you're doing this on the cheap look for regular 84-86 CK & 88-91 RV floor shift columns. Rally cheap would be to just pull the pin on the auto shift lever and take it out. leaving the collar and tang floating. If you properly re-wire everything the collar no longer does anything but move the pointer under the cluster. Remove all of the linkage from the frame and the bottom of the column. Then box it, tag it, and shelf it... or sell it. Move the backup lights away from the column switch to the tranny backup light switch, and move the wires from the neutral safety starter cutout switch to the clutch pedal starter cutout switch. |

wow thanks hatzie for the awesome info. i really want to use the scattershield because im gonna be around 450 hp and i dont want the clutch to kill my if it blows up when im slamming gears. ive heard so many horror stories. it sounds like i need to get everything in front of me and just mess with it until i figure it out. as for the column the wipers arent an issue for me ill prob take the motor out anyway because i have never and will never drive it in the rain or snow so i dont even need them. mr brother stickers the truck so ill be good there.

Thinking of doing this exact same thing on my 84' but with a carbed 5.3. The super t10 with bell is almost the same length as a car th350. I need pedals they are a ***** to find.

yeah a lot of the stuff to do a swap is hard to find actually. i thought i could just go to any junkyard but they all seem to be automatics. i ended up getting all the parts from members here.
