80's Chevy van with a factory floor shift?

Hope I'm asking in the right area.

I located a mid 80's Chevy van that appears to have a factory 3 or 4 speed transmission on the floor! No shifter on column. Shifter is next to driver bucket seat and angles forward.

Anyone know if there was such a thing? It's in a junkyard. Worth anything to sell? How rare?

Thanks,

I believe there is such a thing, and I suspect pretty rare.

Got a pic? Is is a flat shifter? I think the RPO MY6 New Process A833 overdrive trans was available in these, which is what I have in my truck.

I like 'em. They're a nice light duty passenger car type trans with a Hurst shifter.

As far as i can remember there was a three speed on the column. I ordered one base c10 van back in 1982 truck had no bells and whistles and only one seat and a three on the tree with an integral head I6 motor..
IIRC they no longer offered stick after 1984 and i dont recall them having a factory stick on the floor after that

I would suspect its the 4 speed overdrive like keith has. my dad has an 81 chevy truck that had that trans, and it was factory floor shift. if it was a 3speed it got the standard column shift. if so, the trans is pretty rare, and worth quite a bit.

Re: 80's Chevy van with a factory floor shift?

In 1987 at least the standard package offered in Chevy GMC Vans offered MM7 4 speed manual trans, floor mounted, don't remember it being too desireable an option and the floor shift just took up more room in a work van.

i saw one with a floor shifter when i worked at the salvage yard. i think it was only 3 spd. Probably somewhat rare, but as far as it being rare as in valuable forget it----unless you want to sell it to some van freak. But you know how those guys are.......;)

Can you find out exactly what year (or post a pic)?

If we had either one of those we could totally nail this thing.

Sure enough; the info packet in the GM Heritage Center archive for an '87 G Van shows a base MM3 manual 3 speed trans with an optional MM7 manual 4 spd, both floor shifted.

I'm going from memory here, but I think the MM3 is aka M62/M64 which is a passenger car type Saginaw three speed, and the MM7 is the truck type Saginaw M20 trans with the creeper gear.

fyi MM7 is three speed with overdrive not the M420 or M465 truck trans

Chevy vans with manual transmission and floor shifters are quite common in S. America. What was surprising to me was there were a lot more older American cars in good shape running around than here in the states.

Ah. Well played sir (I was going from memory).

So - the MM7 is the MY6/New Process overdrive, like I have in my truck. I thought I remembered that differently.

I'm just lucky to have an almost full library of literature on the square bodies I got at auction from two closed Chevy Dealerships. Not trying to show anyone up, just trying to help. I always enjoy reading your posts Keith, thanks for all your input.

I found one of these for sale locally for $ 100 (just the transmission). It seems that parts are going to be hard to find. I guess I will just stick with the M20 and have the Saignaws for back ups

bob if you get this transmission im definatly interested in buying it from you, must get the bell housing and shifter also as they are specific to these transmissions, well atleast the bell housing is, but the shifter would be a plus. let me know, i'll be at napa all week 7:30-6. thanks, Devin

Re: 80's Chevy van with a factory floor shift?

Many moons ago I had a 86 G10 van. It was ordered with a 305V8 4 barrel and the 4speed, 3.42 rear with G80. What a hoot it was to pull up next to a car and chirp the tries at the light and then to get rubber at 2nd gear.Just wish i could have got 4.11's or better yet 4.56's. The trans was a new process. Looked like a regular car transmission with the shifting linkage coming out of the left side of the housing. The shift lever had to come through the floor at an angle facing forwards. The shift knob was low, right at the right of the drivers seat.

I'll have to see if I can still get it this week Devin. Not sure what it's worth, I usually post on ebay when I'm not sure and let the buyers set the price. I can't even find one on there to see what others are selling for.

You into vans now? :chevy:
