Painting engine need some help with stand and paint
 

I am going to be painting my original 283 v8 engine. Im going to be painting it with VHT high heat silver. No primer. Should I use primer? If so is there high heat primer? Anyway I will be lifting engine out with my tractor. I see there are 4 point engine stands. I have no access to one and only plan on using once so buying one is out of question. Anybody have any ideas of how to paint it without a 4 point stand? Anyone build their own? Also this will be my first time removing an engine and tranny so anyone know were to strap it to? I was just going to make a crattle out of straps and lift it.

The most common lifting points are the holes in the heads like rh rear and lh front. Also common are the last intake manifold bolts on the front and back some use a plate bolted to the intake manifold placed where the carb would normally be.Now for the stand have you checked with some stores known for lower prices, like Norhtern tool or harbor freight. Also you could look in summit or jegs and price a stand there. They are not real expensive. Now on to the paint questions I think there is such a thing as you called for a high heat primer. If you have some paint left on the engine you won't need it but if it is bare cast you will need some sort of primer on there to make it last. The main thing is to get it super super clean so the paint or primer will adhere properly. In my opinion there is not much thing prettier than a clean fresh orange small block ,unless it is a fresh painted orange big block. jim

I looked at prices and thier not bad as I thought, i was guessing more like 5-600. Around here I can get a used brand name for 30-40$. Not bad at all. I need to split tranny from engine to do this. Is this a big job?

Not too big of a job if you can lift it out. That was the hardest part for me since I had to rely on someone else for a hoist. Make sure you get the bolts out of the torque converter before you separate or you'll have a really big mess.

do gears and such go everywere or does it simple come off and then back on ? its a 4 on the floor and were are these hooks in the heads "holes in the heads like rh rear and lh front" Thanks

I removed mine and painted while on the hoist. I had an engine stand but I didn't want to remove the trans. I tested out the engine before I removed it. Here is before and after at the same angle. I used dupli-color engine paint and primer. This is the first time I used the primer so I can't tell you how good it is. I was also depending on someones lift so I didn't have much time with the engine out. Good luck!

can you tell me what shade of blue was used. i want to paint my 230 six the original blue or very close to it.

I used dupli-color chevy blue. They also have GM blue which is a little lighter. I think my engine was GM blue originally but I liked the chevy blue better. I thought of using chevy orange but everybody has it. I want to go for a 60s hot rod look with this truck. I want it to look Original with a little modifications. Here is a pic of the paint. It laid down good after I primed it. As you can tell my engine look real bad and after some scrubbing and paint it came out good. I have been getting good comments about the paint job. Good luck!
