Up through the early 50's a number of states used the serial number that was stamped on the engine on a pad near the distributor as the vehicle's vin number. There is info on the serial numbers here. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...gine.htm#53eng

I was living in McGregor, Tx when I bought the 48 in 1973 and the previous owner being a stickler for detail had applied for and received an "engine change title" that used the number on the door post.

If the Vin number on the title matches the number on the tag on the door post you are home free. I
f it matches the engine and you have the old engine with that number stamped in it don't get rid of it until you get the title corrected. I'm not sure what the process involves but it should be pretty simple.
If truck didn't have an engine or came with a different engine and has the engine number on the title I'd register it that way and at a later date go in and apply for an engine change title.

I guess I going to check the pad on the engine because the plate on the door pillar is gone it was removed at one time,

In all honesty if the door plate is missing and you have a clear title with a number on it, the easiest method is to simply buy a blank plate from one of the numerous suppliers and have it stamped with the number on your title.

i think thats just the engine ID number.
there is no vin stamped on the frame in those years. you may be screwed if you dont already have a title

Do you have a title to the truck? What number is on the title? does it match the number stamped in the block?
There is good info here on decoding your vin number.

If you do have a tag on the door post with a number stamped on it don't remove it no matter how beat up it is as long as you can read the number. I've seen a lot of them that the old slap and dash paint shops painted right over in the 60's and 70's. It doesn't matter if it is painted over as long as it is there with the original rivets.

it would be a crime to put on a vin plate from another truck
