Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
I'm running Early Classic 2.5" Drop Spindles, DJM 3" Drop Springs, and stock shocks. At 5.5" drop, i really have to nurse it down the road to save my control arms. I'm hoping a pair of shocks will help. What are my options? Thanks

Wow first post since you joined in '07. Welcome(back?)!!
Your best bet would be to put some jack stands under the front cross member, pull a wheel and measure from the center of the upper shock stud to the center of the lower stud. Do this with the suspension fully compressed and at full droop. Then just take your measurements to the appropriate site (parts store or online location) to find a shock that has a compressed and extended length that will fit with out bottoming out at full compression and will still have a little travel left at full droop so you aren't hitting the shocks limits before the suspension hits it limits. Repeat the same step for the rear. It might be easier to get all the measurements with the wheels off and out of the way. lets us know how it work out. |
Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
Your front shocks need to match the amount of "spring drop" that you are using.
Look at good quality drop shocks for a 3" drop. (KYB, Belltech, Bilstein, etc) Posted via Mobile Device |

Thanks. Do you guys recommend a particular model for firming up the ride?

Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
Hey! Just the thread I was looking for!!
I'm in the market for some new shocks to replace my KYB GR2's. I was looking at either Bilsteins or Belltech. Any professional recommendations or preferences would be greatly appreciated. I'm running a ECE 4/6 drop on my '68 C10. Thanks |
Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
Curious to see what you come up with. I have approx 5.5", maybe closer to 6" drop in the front, with DJM 3" arms and cut coils. It too low for my taste, looks good but the uppers are shimmed way out and the ball joints are at their limit. The shocks I have came with the DJM kit many, many years ago...

Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
Well I have Belltech shocks on my 03 silverado.... I want to say they lasted a year before they started getting spongy. Ive tried all the different brands. On my 66 im running CPP drop shocks.... They have out performed the belltechs 10 fold. Not trying to step on toes...Just trying to provide my opinion and my experience. I think CPP's are made by Bilstein. Also... you can go to the NAPA website and dig up shocks based on your specific specifications.... usually you can get an HD version too that will stiffen up the ride, for a fraction of the cost of others. A sales person at NAPA should be able to help you too.... Just talk to the most experienced person there... cause like other parts houses you get a few folks that really are clueless. Hope this helps.

Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
i came to this thread looking for this exact info!
my "Toxic drop" shocks are not working to spiffy anymore. ** I figured that there is a way to source a reqular monroe, or something... HD is a good call. Any body have specs or suggestions on generic shock sizes for a static drop of 5/5? (i have 2 inch spring, 3 inch spindles and a flip) Thanks in advance! |

Re: Shocks for a 5.5" Drop?
Here is a link to a thread that might help a little. I would follow Stealthy 69's advice then you can look up the shocks that will fit. I have had good success/life out of the Monroe Sensatracks or however they spell it LOL.
