Spare tire and Jack placement
 

MY truck came with a 'spare' which is just sitting in the bed. I'm ok wiht that for now, but will likely get an underframe bracket to mount it underneath so i can use the entire bed..

That said, I looked everywhere on the truck and can't find a jack anywhere! There obviously needs to be one.. where would it be? or where can i buy an 'orginial' and where would it mount?

This truck? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=496515, if so the stock jack is a funky sorta bottle jack that was really a screw that mounted with a spring behind the driver side seat.

Yes, sorry. It's a '56 3100. If anyone has pictures of what it looks like. And where I can get it, would be appreciated.

I was thinking that's where it went (behind the drivers seat)

That should be the correct jack, they fit a lot of years and usually work pretty well.

A small hydraulic bottle jack works pretty well though but you want one that can get under the front axle with a flat tire.
On my 48 I carried two jacks. One to stick under the end of the frame rail to lift the truck up enough to get the short one under the axle. Having a hot rod truck rather than a restored truck I never worry about having the "correct" anything though.

When you go to wrecking yards just start looking under the hoods and under the seats and behind the seats of mid 70 and earlier trucks and you might run across a jack and the handle.

as i remember they only fit under the axle with good tires on it.

Or, you could "place" them in your garage and go with "run flats".

I thought triple AAA whilst carrying my spare was great, except that i don't like waiting.. and changing a spare is easy and quick. The fact that the jack doesn't fit under the axle with a flat is a concern though as that's the only reason i would use it. Run flats are a great idea, ii guess i'd have to change my tires for that.

I guess the other option os to carry a can or two of that tire inflate stuff..Anyone use that?

i'd get a nice little scissors jack out of a newer truck, should go high enough

98 Tahoe has a great jack kit !

Packaged in a flat box is the Jack shaft sections, in the bag is the Jack crank handle .

This set will allow you to slide the jack under the axle with the shaft sections and retrieve it also.

You can pick one up from the wrecking yard.

This is my solution for my SSR's lack of a spare.

Now that I think about it I should get a set for each of my Classic Trucks.

I picked up one of the stock jacks with handle at the local annual "yard sale" at the trade school across from work for 5.00 yesterday.

They will fit under most trucks that haven't been lowered when you have a flat. I'm not sure what this one is gong in but it will be used in one of my trucks.

I'm switching the gas tank on my 57 to a rear, underbed style. I'm also removing the side mount spare (i know, blasphemy), so is the only option just putting a spare in the bed?

probably a silly question, but i'm a very new addict and owner :)

I have spacesaver doughnut tire, correct bolt pattern, I THINK it will fit behind the passenger seat, but first I have to put the seat in.

Not to hijack the thread, but since it's about a TF jack, does this look like the correct jack for a 57? If so, does anyone have a pic of the correct handle that would be used?

I use a high lift, but then I am usually lifting mine out of a ditch, hole or off a rock. You can also use them as a come along or to separate stuff, like a crushed roof or door at a wreck.

that looks like the correct jack and bracket
i believe the lug wrench was the handle
you had to be tough to change a tire on any old truck
belly crawl under the truck to set the jack
and then jack it up with half your body under the truck

Does anyone have pictures of where the jack geos.. and more specifically, that 'bar' you use to turn the jack with? I figured out how to 'secure' :) the jack in place with that spring, but i got another longer spring and some holders for what seems to be that bar that folds in two.

Pictures would be awesome.

russell ashley: i misspoke, that is not a period correct jack for a 55-59
the correct jack has a screw on the bottom that you turn

I wondered about that after I saw some of the other pics of original jacks. I had to remove it to install the seatbelts so I wasn't going to use it anyway. It did fit the bracket like it was correct for it though. I'm going to get a jack from a late model Chevy van, which comes in a plastic case, and mount that under the seat when I ever start driving the truck.
