Battery Cables
 

Did my due diligence and looked around but couldn't find anything. I'm gonna be replacing the battery cables on my truck. I know the lengths (positive-45", negative-25"). I'd like to see the stock V8 routing, either from a restored truck or an assembly manual. Thanks in advance!

Thank you Sir! I found that one while doing my research thats how I knew how long they were supposed to be. Proper routing is the bigger question. While trying to de-bonehead this truck everything must go back together appropriately. Otherwise, why bother? If I'm taking the time to straighten it out I wanna put it back together correctly. Its not even close to being a 100% correct resto but when the potential buyer see it, its stuff like that that lets them know I took care to make it right.

If you not looking for "factory" correct I suggest yo run a short negative cable from one of the starter bolts to he frame. Makes for a great ground.

What year truck? A/C or no A/C? I believe the routing will vary depending on your answers. For example, most under hood pictures I see on this forum show the batteries (top post) on pre-1971 trucks with the positive terminal toward the center. My 69 with a top post battery came new with the positive toward the passenger fender and close to the core support. Those with side post batteries (1971 and later?) had the positive toward the center and away from the core support. My 69 with A/C has a loop on the A/C bracket that the negative cable passes through.

Good question...I wonder if it is year specific? and if a/c makes a difference? I know duncan and son are doing a 100pt resto on a truck so they probably know...

Attached are pics of my 69 with A/C and 350. The A/C brackets were not used on any trucks I've seen after 69 (thank God). The service manual shows these brackets for the 350 and shows the more commonly seen bracket type that was used in later years for the 307 with emissions equipment. Obviously, the routing of the negative cable would have to differ in terms of the point of securement depending on the A/C setup. The cables shown are the original GM cables. I don't recall ever removing them until I started my project.

The top pic is the negative. Other 2 are the positive showing the 2 retention locations.
