Help with 3/4 ton rear hub/drum instalation?
I had to completely rebuild my '69 C20's rear brakes. I am installing the hub/drum assembly and the manual says to torque the inner wheel bearing nut to 50-60 ft. Lbs and the outer to 170. The problem is that when I torque down the inner nut the hub/drum assembly no longer spins freely on the spindle. Is this correct? Should I loosen the inner nut to allow for free spinning movement or do I just follow the manual?
I am hoping to get wheels back on today, so any help is appreciated greatly! Paul Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

I think your missing a step. After the inner is torqed, it should be backed off 1/8 of a turn or something like that. If you can't find the proper specs, I just back it off, the hand tight on the inner nut.

My big ol hubs on my Eaton rearend spin with ease.
I tightened them down pretty good then back em off slowly until they spun fair and locked the lil washer over. |

Thanks everyone! I am going to pull the axle shafts and redo them so that they spin freely. I'm glad I checked with you all here as I would probably have ruined those expensive new bearings.
