Why is my tailgate not stamped CHEVROLET?
 

I just bought a 68 shortbox and noticed the tailgate isn't stamped Chevrolet. It has some white vinyl lettering instead and I don't like it so I think I am going to remove that. Was there certain year tailgates that didn't have the stamping?

More than likely an aftermarket gate. The plain replacement tail gates are about half the cost of a replacement gate with either Chevrolet or GMC on it.

Some aren't stamped "Chevrolet" because they are GMCs ;)

Tim is being funny, he isn't saying that GMC gates are blank.
All 67-72 Chevy's and GMC's had stamped gates, either GMC or CHEVROLET.
Someone could have welded a plate on yours to make it a "smooth" gate, but not likely. More than likely you have an aftermarket gate on the truck.

Yeah,I was just being dumb. You most likely have an aftermarket gate. Before those were made some would take and make a "smoothed" gate from a stamped one.
