Buying my first old truck...70 Chevy c10 stepside.
And I'm fairly mechanically illiterate. Am I biting off too much? Truch has very little rust, but needs a fair amount of cosmetic work. We'll see what happens mechanically. Any tips for me? I'll put pics up next week.

We all started out that way. Here's your chance to learn the wonderful world of auto repair.
I'm self taught on most subjects. Couldn't afford someone to weld for me so I bought a welder and learned. Same with painting, bodywork, mechanicals and just about everything else. :D Best advice, ask plenty of questions here and have fun along the way. |

Besides leaking oil and the speedo not working (a nice surprise on the way home), it ran great. |

Re: Buying my first old truck...70 Chevy c10 stepside.
Nice for a first truck! :)
I would give only one piece of advice on not being mechanically inclined and owning an old rod. Make sure it ain't your daily driver. Cuz when you get to work on them and learn the basics of wrenchin' for the fun of it... it makes for a lot more good fun in the end. Fixin' stuff on a 40 year old rod cuz you have to have it for work the next morning and it's 9:30pm... sucks bigtime. Ask me how I know! Gary |

Re : WELCOME ! 70 Chevy C/10 stepside.
Nice rig there .
As mentioned , these are dead simple and nearly everything on it , can be taken carefgully apart & repaired , no need to $pend $$ on Mechanics IMO . Resist the urge to take the whole truck apart , therin lies madness and frustration . What's under the hood ? . |
Re: Buying my first old truck...70 Chevy c10 stepside.

Re: Buying my first old truck...70 Chevy c10 stepside.
Those are the toes of the woman I married 5 weeks ago. She wasn't too thrilled about me buying it (an understatement, to say the least), especially so soon after the wedding.
I appreciate all of the words of encouragement. It has a 350 V8 that has Holly Carbs on Edlebrock headers. I'll put up a pic of the engine bay soon. My plans are to 1. Fix the speedo 2. Stop oil from leaking 3. Fix the bed 4a. Put something on there to tow the boat, likely a Reese hitch 4b. Get a radio that doesn't have a cassette player 5. Get Seat cover and newer door panels 6. Make all of my friends jealous. That's the plan |

Re : The Facts , Jack ~
Try to explain to her that you having an old truck to fiddle with will save you $ by being able to haul things with it plus it's better for you to be tinkering on it than be off getting loaded in some bar....
My ex thought being a drunk was better than being a Mechanic , she's gone , I'm not drunk and I love my truck  . As you get it sorted out she'll come around , at least she drives it ! . |
Re: Buying my first old truck...70 Chevy c10 stepside.
