Pulling an engine checklist??
I'm about ready to pull the engine in my shorty but it's been a while since I've done this so I was hoping you guys could lay out some sort of checklist or order in which to do things so I can do things on the proper order so I don't run to any snags. Any helpful tips I may have forgotten would be greatly appreciated. Thanks on advance.

1st and IMO most important...drain and remove the radiator. I made that expensive mistake when I replaced the engine in my diesel suburban. Before that, if you are working on a 4x4...try to make sure your hoist will lift high enough to remove the engine, or have a plan in case it doesn't....the most recent engine swap I did on the same diesel burb, I had to remove the wheels and put it on small jack stands to get the clearance I needed.

Depending on what your plan is with the whole removal. There a few different way you can go about it.
First an foremost I would say remove all electrical connections and label each one so you know where it goes when you reinstall. Drain the coolant and oil out of the truck. Disconnect the trans cooler lines from the radiator. (assuming you have an auto) Remove the radiator as stated Optional - Remove the whole core support. Makes life a lot easier. Unbolt the fuel lines. Unbolt the exhaust manifolds from the engine. Remove spark plug wires and plugs so you don't risk breaking one off. Unbolt the transmission from the engine and place a block under the transmission to keep it level. Unbolt the engine mounts and start lifting it out. That is about what I go off of. Works well. Although most times I end up taking a lot more off the engine first to make things easier. |
