What metal are you all using for framework??
After spending the weekend getting the tires on my C4 axle and placing it under the frame it is quite apparent that I am not going to get the ride height that I want without modifying the frame in that area. I am fine with this I just wanted my original bed without tubs.
Anyways what metal are you all using when modifying the rear frame area? I was thinking .120 wall rectangular 2x4. I dont know if DOM is an option for rectangular tube but if so are you using HREW or DOM? |
Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
We use 2/4 sq 3/16 wall for our front crosssmembers we build.
For our chassis we build we use 2x4 sq 120 wall For our tube x-members we use 1 1/2 125 wall dom round tubing There is no Dom tubing in sq tubing Justin |
Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
Sweet, thanks for the response. Heading the the metal supply place now, then off to get cutting wheels.
Anyone know a place to buy bulk 4 1/2" cutting wheels? |
Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
Go to your local welding supply store in your town and they can get you your abrasives you will need

Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
yea I checked with them last time I filled my welding bottle and they are still over $2 a wheel. I just figured there would be a place where they bulk 20 or 30 blades for less the $2 a blade.

Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
I buy my cut off wheels from harbor freight. I also use 3/16 thick metal on my frame work.

Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
I used to use HF for the wheels too until the ones stocked by my local store seemed to develop a habit of shattering into large shards while using them. Lately I've found the off-brand carried by my local Home Depot to be better.
Also realistically the durability of some of the name brand discs outweighs the cost savings of a quicker wearing cheapo brand. Same pretty much applies imho to HF's sandpaper too. |

What ever cutoff wheels you buy please wear face and hand protection. I learned the hard way, I'm just thankful it exploded and cut my hand and my my face or eyes. |
Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
yea at minimum i am wearing eye and hand protection, typically I am wearing a welding jacket too if im not wearing long sleeve shirts

I hear ya. HF wheels are made by the C.H. Ina company and they are not as good quality as say a Walter. I use cut-off wheels on nearly a daily basis at work and I have seen the cheap ones blow apart. In fact, just last week my helper (very experienced) had one blow apart and it missed him, but a large piece ricocheted off a steel door and imbedded itself in the front fascia of his brand new Highlander Hybrid. He was using a Made in China wheel. I personally like Walter and Tyrolit (German). But NEVER get lazy and use them to grind with. Like Kabwe said, "let the wheel do the work" and also don't twist the wheel in the steel. |

2x4= Outside dimensions of square stock. HF= Harbor Freight. Low cost tool outlet. Mainly Chinese imports but some of it is sufficient for the home hobbyist. Kim |
Re: What metal are you all using for framework??
Good looking out Kim, Chevette I use them a lot too, hence my desire to find a bulk purchase. I have had a couple bind up and the outer edge blows apart but I have never had one come completely apart. I will keep using them though no matter what, I actually prefer them to plasmas.

I've seen a coupon for 10 for $5.99, but nothing current. This is a link to a thread that is refreshed frequently with the latest HF deals and coupons. I didn't see anything stellar there, but it's worth checking on from time to time. http://slickdeals.net/f/1276399-Harb...-Coupon-Thread All sorts of 10 pack deals. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog...=cutoff+wheels |
