help with tire size

I need help with choosing tire sizes. I want bigger tires in the rear obviously so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with 275/60/15 but am undecided on the front size. I was thinking about going with 235/60/15 but I don't know. Id like to see some different combinations to help me make up my mind. The overall look I'm gonna eventually have is a late 60's muscle truck look.

IMO, 235/60/15s look dinky on the front of these trucks. 255/60/15 looks good. Also a 225/70/15 looks good on the front with a 275/60/15 rear tire.

Here's mine with a 275/60/15 Rear, 255/60/15 steer on a 3.5/5 drop.

What size rims are you using, you want the tire size to work with the rim size also.

Here's another set, for comparison. The fronts are 15X8, with 3.5" b/s, and the tires are 215/65/15s. The rear combination is 15X10, with 4.5" b/s, and the tires are 295/50/15s. This set of tires and wheels are on a 4/5 drop (told to me by the po).

I might add, now that they've been on the truck for a while, I really don't like this combination. Primarily, I think the front tires are very short and don't sufficiently fill the wheel well. I also don't like the way the tread pattern seems to "run over the edge" of the sidewall. It isn't a very clean look, in my opinion. I just didn't want to change the tires out right now, in light of having been laid off last Friday!

Unfortunately, I don't really have a choice on the rear tires. Two weeks ago, while taking the daughter's boyfriend for a ride, I picked up large screw in one of the rear Dunlop GT Qualifiers. Pressure loss, and the resultant side-to-side sway, cut the hell out of the inner sidewall on the passenger side, destroying the tire. Essentially, you currently can't find Dunlop GT Qualifiers.

Not sure what I'm going to do, might just change out the entire combination! :waah:

Re: help with tire size

another idea to ponder: i'm getting ready to swap to a set of rally wheels on my truck in a couple weeks after i get back from my weekend get away. i'm going to 15 x 7 up front and 15 x 8 in rear. the front tires will be a 215/70 and the rears are gonna be 275/60. right now i have 15 x7 up front and 15 x 10 rear with a 235/60 up front and 295/50 on rear. to me the tires are too small up front. i like the rears but up front looks silly to me. and i couldn't find anything else to use up front that would look better without being taller than my rears and i didn't want that. oh yeah my truck appears to have about a 4/5 drop. not sure about the front it only shows to have 3 inch springs but i know the back has 3 inch springs and a 2 inch block but i still have a little rake. but it could be the big block helping the front end out.

Is your truck lowered or stock height? Do you plan to lower it any? As mentioned before, what size wheels do you have?

Re: help with tire size

Its stock height right now but it will be lowered shortly. The plan is to do a 5/7 drop but that may change after I get new tires. As of now I have 15x8 steel white generic wheels but am getting summit steel wheels soon.

Sorry, but here's my dinky 235/60/15 (on 15x6 steels) & 255/70/15 on 15x8 Wheel Vintique).
.
And yes, I'm partial to the Old School Big & Little set.

I'll see if I can find some pics for you. In the meantime, check out the ECE site. They have some stance photos and there trucks use a 245/60/15 front tire.

I just did a 5 lug disc brake conversion on my 68 and put 15x8 rallys with 275/60s all the way around and I think it's perfect. Plus I can rotate front to back.

That sounds pretty good - do you have a picture? The "standard" choice is there is such a thing, is 245/60/15 in front, 275/60/15 in back. That's what I have right now, but I'm looking at going to 16 inch rims (I am putting Wilwood 11" discs all the way around) and I'm not sure if the 15 inch rims will clear in the front without spacers. I think that this "standard" looks a little small on a 2/4 drop, but anything lower, they fill the wheel wells pretty nicely. I was looking at 255/60/16's in front, and 285/60/16's in back. If anyone has this combo, if you could post a picture, that would be great. ( I am talking about Rallys, and 8" wide rims)

Here is one as of Sunday. I had just sat it on the ground after the 5 lug swap. I haven't put the engine and trans back in it yet but you'll get the idea. I've only had it since February but I think it's coming along.
