starter noise
 

when I start my truck the starter which is new make a gear missing clang loud noise and sometime wont even start any thougths? 350 350t 66 c10

Bad flywheel? We had an AMC car that sounded/acted like that and it was the flywheel.

Were you having problems earlier?

X2 on bad flywheel, maybe its missing some teeth :sexy:. just an idea, rotate the engine using the balancer bolt then try and start it.

Mike, I have not even driven it 2 miles it was fine when the 170 dollar starter was installed I messed with the timing cause it was acting up and then the starter started making this crazy noise

OP, your last post was # 357, my favorite caliber. :)

I'm definetely no mechanic, I'm a part replacer once I'm told what part to replace, sooo I don't know. Good luck.

I had a starter on a 350 do the same thing and I just went to the autoparts store picked up some shims and shimmed it,Make sure you know what style bolt pattern you have on the starter so you buy the right style shims the first time(staggered, or straight shims)...usually you'll get three or four shims that are different thicknesses, start with the smallest size and then add the thicker ones as needed...Sometimes youll never have to shim a starter the whole time you own the motor but sometimes for some reason theres one that you will..good luck.

first of all thanks for all the tech help. I did get it fixed I had a buddy come over and we found that the mini starter that was install by the mechanic about 3 months ago the starter somehow was missing hitting the flywheel most of the time and started chewing the teeth up, this was a 170 dollar starter it worked which we dont know how. So we changed to a standard starter and it works great and its engaging the flywheel like it should Thanks again
