my 82 gmc

i have been doing some work on the wrecked dash guages and bought a replacement but there where alot of broken items in the old one so im not sure about some things

the first thing i want to ask is can anyone tell me where the transmission gear indicator acctaches to ?
i replaced the old broken one but cant work out where the clip with the string attaches to so i can get the indicator to work any help would be great

It clips on the steering column then a bolt locks it down
