disc brakes & step bumper for 65 1/2 ton

I read the link below about 3/4 ton brake swaps but does that also apply for 1/2 tons ?
the link below said quote "not a myth, but you will also need tie rods, center link, ball joints and stuff from that year truck.... or just swap the entire front crossmember"
it seems that because these crossmembers are welded that it would be a lot of unecessary work to do that . Is there any advantage to changing entire thing . I already have a few 73-80- front ends/ .
I am also looking fro a 'BOLT ON" style rear step bumper for these trucks .
Who offers the best catolog for this style truck also . thanx for any help, DAVE

Dave,
I changed the entire crossmember in my 64 and swapped it for a 76 model with disc brakes. It bolted up with little problems. there are 7 bolts that hold each side to the frame, 4 in the side of the frame, 3 in the bottom of the frame. All bolts lined up except the bottom two of the 4 side bolts, they are off about 1/16 of an inch. I just egged out the holes a little and the bolts went in perfectly. Very easy job and took only about an hour and I did it all myself. You will need to hit an alignment shop though before you do very much driving though. Have fun.
