k5 rear glass dot matrix tint removal?
 

anyone remove the factory dots they call tint? its a 78 jimmy and the dots are so bad its hard to see out of the back. anyone ever take them off and if so how?

I have never seen this on a Blazer rear glass. I used to work at a dealership and when we sent out cars to get tinted, they would sand down the dots. they never removed them completely. The tint would never really lay down flat around the dots. I always said it looked like crap.

Might have to find another rear glass that is clear.

I've never seen those on a K5. Where'd the glass come from? Do you have pics?

It was on mine too and scratched up. Could barely see through it. It's the same garbage they make those rear window graphics out of.

mines actually a 78 jimmy. i try to remember to post a pic. im thinking maybe use aircraft paint remover on the dots and just be careful with other paint around it

I actually found one of these windows today and was wondering about them. It is soft ray glass and at first I thought it was aftermarket. I have a parts business and have never seen one of these before.

I've never seen these either. If one was in a 78 model, it nearly had to be a replacement. If anyone can post a pic I'd like to see one.

i tried paint stripper. let it sit for 2 or 3 mins and tried to wipe it off and all it did was clean it. i did find ou that lmc sells the glass though. thats good since the glass is scratched anyway

I don't think it was factory. I would try a razor blade before you buy a new glass.

It is factory on these. . The glass is softray just like any of the factory tinted glass. My father in laws 91 blazer has this as well.

Really? I have never seen one. If it is made that way, nevermind about the razor blade. I would check price at a local glass shop, too.

Yep, factory option for the years of 89-91 (I believe). My 89' came with the dot matrix tint from the factory. Some of the older blazer tints, say around 85 had the deep tint within the glass similar to the side windows......

The dot matrix is pretty tough! I used a razor blade (carefully) to remove rear stickers. I don't have any idea how to remove it cleanly though.

well, looks like its a newer blazer glass! ok, i learn something new about it everyday. i did try to use a razor while the stripper was soaking in. didnt phase it at all....just cleaned it some

That dot matrix must be made of unobtanium, because I have a can of paint stripper that has eaten right through the steel can it's contained in. :eek:
