Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
With the great availability of knock off wheel and tire combos for sale by people going to custom wheels, does any of this 16-18 inch 6 lug stuff fit our trucks? I've seen lots of good buys on wheel/tire combos for sale locally that are 6 lug x 5.5 but don't want to spend good money for something that won't fit because of center hole size, stud size differences or offsets that won't work. Any of you have any success stories? (pictures needed of course)

I got a smokin deal on a set of 16's, 3 of em came with tires even. I got em all off CL for $50. (Yes, that's FIFTY dollars) They're going on my 62 when I get new tires for them (probably 245/50/16), then sell my stock rims and tires (15"). I measured the centers on both and they seem to be identical at 3.5" openings. If there's any slight difference, I can machine em.

Re: Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
i assume you're asking about much NEWER stuff, but if you like steelies and would like to add disk brakes (which won't fit inside stock pre-71 steelies), the 71+ K10 wheels are a great option. Correct 6 lug and clear disks and look darn near identical to our stock 15x5.5's. And accept stock cap size. They are a little newer, but assume you're referring to the shiny stuff, in which case, disregard! :)

Nice looking wheel, let us know how they mount up on front and rear. I would question what the inside tire to bedside clearance would be. |

I'm not sure what direction I want to go with wheels yet, just thinking out loud. I see a lot of late model wheel/tire combos for sale pretty cheap. I just don't know how they really fit on our trucks without a lot of monkey business like spacers, remachining, etc. The truck currently has some old 70's vintage, rusty chrome, 8 spoke wheels and only 3 at that. The fourth wheel is some late model steel wheel. I need to get 4 wheels on the truck that at least match. |

I'm pretty sure you will at least need spacers. New wheels have a lot more backspacing.
Here's one on 20"s. |
Re: Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
Update....I tried mounting my new rims and turns out I measured the center holes wrong. openings need to be 3 &5/8" rather than 3.5, so I will need to get them machined a bit to fit. Good news is that tire width will be nearly identical, using a 225/60/r16 tire, unless I choose to use spacers for aesthetics. Just an FYI guys, make sure you have a buddy there to smack you in the head when you measure wrong!!

Oldgearz,
Just a heads; when you bolted them up, did you rotate the rim to make sure there wasn't inside intereference? My 61 has these rim (16") and they bolted on fine with a small spacer plate, but upon driving them, I found the inside of the front rim was scrapping a bit. I went to spacers because of this. I have stock drumbrakes. |
Re: Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
What it is, is the inside hole on the newer rims have a dual lip, I measured the outside lip rather than the inside smaller lip. I tried rotating and it's definately off a bit. Same with the fronts. It has to be 3 5/8's to allow the slight bit of wiggle room that they're supposed to have. I was afraid if I did spacers the studs would be too short. They would have to be at least 1/2 inch or more I think. I'm running stock drums all around. Hopefully machining the aluminum will be simple and cheap. There's plenty of lip to machine so no worries there.

Due to the how much different the backspacing is you'll probably need spacers like this. They bolt to the hub, then bolt the wheel to the spacer. These are about 2.5" spacers.

You have to forgive me, I've never used wheel spacers before! If I can get some cheap, one inch would be plenty. Thanks for the info

Thanks Dean, the spacers did not affect either of those; rides pretty smooth. |

Hey Dean,
These are 16" and looked like this...all I did was remove the chevy center cover, take GMC center caps and trimmed them a bit till they fit the center section. |
Re: Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
Oops! forgot to say I got the rims off the Craigslist.

Re: Newer stock Chev truck wheels on 60-66 trucks
I had to have the centers trimmed on the 18" Titan steelies I run. But only for the back... The fronts fit fine over the CPP 6 lug rotors on 84 spindles... I wish I had pix for u guys. I'll get em once I get the arms and shackles back on...
